Needing ammo advice

Well as I just posted in the daily carry section, I have a new CZ P-01 that will be my winter and hopefully main carry piece. Now the tricky part....picking carry ammo. I know the JHPs that perform in .380 and .40SW, but 9mm is a new flavor for me. Now with my basic knowledge of bullet weights in general, it would seem that given a 124 grain bullet, +P ammo would be a good choice to compensate for its smaller size compared to .40 and .45. My main questions are: Is there a SIGNIFICANTLY greater risk of over penetration with +P JHPs? What makers are y'alls favorites in 9mm? I am learning on this one so teach away! Nope. In fact, the risk is often less. In the past, in 9mm, it has been sub-sonic 147gr rounds that have been notorious for their over-penetration.

Personally, I like rounds that get lots of use and have a good track record. That's why I chose 124gr +P Speer Gold Dots for my 9mm carry round.

Pick one that has a good track record, like Xander said. And then don't fret about it; it's too easy to get caught up in rounds of second-guessing your decision.

Oh yeah, make sure it works reliably in your gun ,too.

I also have a CZ PO1 and while it has shot everything I have put into it I have settled on Federal HST 147 grain HP for SD. The ballistics look good and I can shoot well with it. There are many types of ammo that are very good. Try several to see what YOU like best.

My water jug tests. HST is the far right, Speer GD is next to it. Both look like they would do the trick. HST penetrated into the next jug past the Speer GD

As long as it's a full power premium hollowpoint (+P, +P+, or not) like the ones DoubleJ mentioned above, where you place the projectile is a lot more important than which brand you select. Pick one you can consistently deliver to point of aim, first time every time.

I just bought 1000 rds of Speer Gold Dot 124 grain +P ammo.

Right now I'm just carrying Winchester 115 grain JHP from Academy. Let me put a couple hunnerd rounds of the Gold Dot through and it will be my new carry ammo.

I carry the same round in my Hi-Power. It is the defacto 9mm round for MANY (if not most) LE agencies, from what I have seen. They are consistent in their performance, both in feeding and in ballistics and accuracy.

I'll give a +1 to Speer Gold Dots in 124-gr +P. I'll also throw my support behind Winchester Ranger 124-gr +P. Both of those have performed flawlessly in both of my carry pieces, so it just comes down to subtleties in accuracy for me. The Gold Dots do better in my PX4, and the Rangers do better in the Walther. You can find pretty good deals on the Gold Dots on Gunbroker.com. IIRC, you can get 150 rounds of it for about $60 once shipping is factored in.

I very much agree with Excaliber and DoubleJ. The most important thing of any ammo is will it feed without any problems in your gun, and then bullet placement...practice, practice, practice. Be sure of your target and what is beyond before you pull the trigger.

Thanks guys. My main concern is that +P would over penetrate as I have never actually shot any. Thanks as well for all for the ammo recommendations. As you all know, different guns like different bullets but I just needed to see the consensus on what were some of the solid performers. Hopefully I will get it to the range this weekend or next and start the break in. Just helps to narrow down to a few than try out 7 or 8 brands and types ya know? Let you know how it goes!
