Renewing my CHL

Post by Doug.38PR »

Well, it's been almost 4 years now since I started carrying. In February my CHL will expire. I got some notice of it from the DPS about a week ago.

Tell me, what all do I need to do. More to the point, what will I not have to do that I had to do when I applied the first time.

Do I need to send in fingerprints and all that paperwork junk? I know I don't have to take the whole 9 hour course just the handgun qualification thing. I think they have to redo the background check and all.

Also, probably before the year is out, that is before my CHL expires, my residence will probably have changed to Louisiana. I understnad I can keep my Texas CHL as an out of state, is there anything extra I need to go through to do this?

Go online and fill out your renewal application, basically verifying that you have not moved, and no other info has changed. DPS will send you a packet. You submit 1 fingerprint card this time, instead of 2, and you submit a new photo. You also have to submit new, notarized, affidavits.

Your initial class should have been a minimum of 10 hours. The renewal class is a minimum of 4 hours. Written test and proficiency test.

All you do to change to a non-resident permit is change your address showing you have moved out of state.

3 affidavits, same as your original application - Eligibility, Release of Records, and Knowledge of Laws
