De Montrond car dealership, Texas City, obsolete sign

The De Montrond car dealership on I-45 in Texas City has obsolete signs that refer to Vernon's Civil Statutes 4413(29ee) on some doors.

They gave it the old college try. The letters are about 1 inch high, white on smoked glass, in English and español.

These signs have had no legal force for about a dozen years, and I'm guessing they're that old. Certainly no one seemed interested in enforcing them.

I'm just mentioning them for the sake of anyone who might get nervous about them. I don't intend to bring the fact that the signs are unenforceable to their attention.

(BTW, we bought a new-to-us set of wheels, which eliminates a large part of our post-Ike heartburn. Both our cars were flooded and totaled by Ike.)

Those signs are probably left over from when that dealership was owned by Johnny Smith, "We're not far from wherever you are."

I understand. I lost my my Honda, I want another too. The only car I ever had thatI liked more after owning it for a year than when it was new. They kinda grow on you. But the prices have shot up a lot in the last year.

M wife sells aoutmotive websites, and recently met with the "high ups" at this dealer group. She sent them an email this morning advising them of the outdated sign. She also let them know how signs like this could affect their business in many different ways. She also "enlightened" them to the fact that CHL holders are among the MOST desireable persons to have on their property, for a variety of reasons.

I'll advise of any response received.

OK. I just hope it doesn't result in their posting valid 30.06 signs.

This is an example of how 30.06 signs can be problematic. We lost both our cars in Ike. We live in Galveston, and this dealership is about 15 miles away. It's the closest dealership that is open for business. We got a ride there from a friend of my wife. I had no place to disarm or safely stow a weapon.

Yea, but being as they are just outdated....it could go ether way. If they update them....then there will be no doubt as to the intent.

She very politely pointed out that CHL holders are the only persons that the signs apply to...not the criminals. She also gave a brief overview of the process that CHL holders go through in regard to background checks etc. and ensured them that we are the good guys. Very PC email....we will see where it goes.

This is true, of course. But depending upon their IQ or blind prejudices, they may or may not be able to receive the message.

If she has any further correspondence with them, she could add that since their signs have been obsolete and unenforceable for almost a dozen years, they have had an unknown number, maybe hundreds, of armed CHL holders do business with them, with no problem.

I guess some folks just can't leave well enough alone. They have to go and try to convert or inform everyone of the facts when they just should let things be.

As stated before....these signs have been up for years. This dealer group is under new management since the quoted statutes on the signs were valid. I see no problem in politely educating the new management about the signs and their meanings and implications. If they decide to update them and prohibit CCW on their lots....I wouldn't want to do business with them anyway. If they see the logic behind our "enlightenment" and choose to remove any and all signage prohibiting CCW (whether legally binding or not) I would consider them for a purchase, as well as point family and friends, many of whom live in that area, to their dealerships.

I would rather deal with someone that accepts CHL holders based on being well informend, and out of choice, rather than out of blind ignorance.

If she sells websites I see this as a very good thing for a sales person to do. She is the 3rd party advocate for chl holders.
Doing the same as if they had a sign on the door saying shave before entering. Unenforcable but would make me go someplace else.
