Words Fail Me...

Post by ELB »

This happened in Northern Ireland. I believe "PSNI" is Police Service, Northern Ireland.

Beyond that, words fail me.

Gun expert shot in hand sues PSNI

Mr Woods' lawyers claim the proper safety procedures were not in place
A police weapons specialist who shot himself in the hand is suing the PSNI.

Peter Woods, 50, was dismantling a gun at a police facility in February last year when the accident happened.

It is understood that he removed the magazine from a pistol, but a bullet in the chamber fired into his hand. He recovered from his injury.

Lawyers for Mr Woods claimed in the High Court that proper safety procedures were not in place, and ammunition may have been faulty.

Mr Woods, a civilian weapons maintenance specialist, was injured at the Seapark base in Carrickfergus, County Antrim, in February 2007.

His legal team is arguing that a proper risk assessment was not carried out and a second person should have been present to reduce the accident risk.

The case was adjourned until next week, when police witnesses are expected to appear before the court.

Man people will sue over anything, this really takes the cake.

It happened here in Houston at the GRB (gunshow) a while back...If it could happen to this guy, it could happen to anyone...

And the guy here in Houston is a participant in this forum...

There really are only four rules of safety to follow . . . and as usual, injury resulted when more than one of these rules was violated; in this case, the "professional" appears to have violated the first three.

Working from memory, so the words probably aren't exactly as Cooper wrote them:

1. Every gun is always loaded. The officer didn't check, but assumed it was unloaded.

2. Don't point the muzzle at what you're unwilling to destroy. The officer pointed the gun at his hand.

3. Keep your finger off the trigger unless you're ready to shoot. Unless there was an actual mechanical defect, he must have pulled the trigger.

4. Be sure of your target, what's around, in front of, and behind it. Give him a pass on this one, since one presumes he wasn't trying to shoot anything at all.

If there's any fault of the department here, it's on the head of the manager or supervisor who promoted this nincompoop to the position of Police Weapons Specialist.
