Residents Required To...

Post by Crosstimbers Okie »

... have a Texas CHL? Or, can someone moving to Texas from Missouri with a Florida non-resident CCW carry on Florida CCW until Texas residency requirement is satisfied?

Anyone know for certain?

Yes you can. In fact, you are not required to get a Texas CHL to carry here as long as you have your Florida permit(?) . I would hope you will get a CHL for two reasons.

First, you need to know Texas law. You can take the CHL course before your residency is met and they are good for 2 years, from what I was told. Second, we need the numbers and outspoken voters. You will have a greater voice in Austin if you fill your post, to your elected servants, with the fact you have a CHL because they will know you are law abiding.

Welcome to Texas and please learn all you can about the laws of our state. Visit this site often and that will be easier to do. There are very knowledgeable people here and some outstanding opinions. You will find you learn much more outside your CHL class than in it. It is, after all, a basics class.

Oh, a Texas CHL would definitely be on the agenda. It was just the 6 months residency requirement that was at issue.

Thanks for your reply!!

The six months residency does not apply, so long as you establish residency by getting your TX DL.

There is no longer a residency requirement for a Texas CHL. Not 6 months, not even 5 minutes. If you are a legal resident of the United States, you can get a Texas CHL (if you meet all the other requirements).

If you have established residency in Texas, by a number of ways, you get a resident license. If you have not, and don't intend to, then you get a non-resident license.

Welcome to the forum

this made me think of a comic one time had a joke about "Welcome to Texas, here's yer gun" being on the welcome signs.
FWIW, IIRC, AFAIK, FTMP, IANAL. YMMV.

I'll have to see if I can find a picture that I saved, maybe from this forum. Anyway, it's a road sign that says "Welcome to Texas, New Resident Rifle Pickup in Two Miles"

When I moved to Texas about 10 years ago, I told a friend I was going back to get my guns from storage (Father-In-Law's safe.) He advised I should have never been let across the border without them, or given one when I passed through the 'Yankee Dipping Station'! :biggrinjester:

What I DIDN'T tell him was I was going to get 'the rest' of my guns that I couldn't carry on the first trip.
