A couple weeks ago there was a post concerning a member here that wrote a letter to his chain of command requesting permission to carry at work. My work place has established policy that weapons are prohibited unless written permission is obtained from the VP of corporate securtity.

My name is XXX XXXXXX. I am the Logistics Manager for the YYY program. I would like to take this opportunity to request a waiver on my part concerning the newly established Weapons policy. For informational purposes, I am a Texas Concealed Handgun license holder. I have undergone an extensive background investigation in order to be issued the CHL. Additionally, I have undergone an extensive background investigation in order to attain and maintain my Secret Security Clearance. As a Texas CHL holder I have never been convicted of a Felony, am current on all tax issues, and have never been delinquent on child support. I have taken 10 hours of training and am required to pass both a written and practical firing test. I mention this only to confirm the civil stature of an individual that is issued a Texas CHL.

I have carried a handgun everyday since being issued my Texas CHL and for 5 years before that in the State of Virginia with a Virginia Concealed Weapons Permit. I have never had an accident or incident with any firearm I own or carry. I train regularly, a couple times a month, with my handgun. I am a firm believer and supporter of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. I believe that all Americans are born with the God given right to self defense. I understand the concept of providing a safe work environment for our employees. However, the new policy also puts those employees at risk. While XYZ CORP may employ Security Guards for their locations, although, Fort Worth does not have Security guards on duty during normal work hours, how will you guarantee the safety of our employees during their drives home after work. This policy prevents me, and any other employee from being able to defend ourselves should the need arise. Please understand that it is my sincerest hope that I never have to use my handgun to defend myself, but, should the need arise; I definitely have the right and should have the ability to defend myself.

I would like to take this opportunity to formally ask for a written waiver to this policy.

The above is the letter I intend to send to the Corporate VP of Security. If you all see any problems with it or think there may be a better way to say it please let me know. The policy goes into effect on Monday the 17th. I want to send this off as soon after that as I can.

Here's why I suggest those changes: if you ever make yourself look or sound like a "gun nut", you've already lost the argument. Carrying every day and spending time on the range twice a month is "gun nuttery" to many people, no matter how incorrect their definition. We understand the concept of carrying 24/7 because you can't guess where you might need a gun, but they don't. But chances are they understand the "I might need it in my car" argument, so you need to focus on before and after work.

Another thing: despite what we were taught in high school typing class, it's proper to only include one "space" after a period but before the next sentence. There are typographic reasons why we used two spaces when typing on Underwoods using Courier, but that no longer applies using proportional fonts.

I know, I know... it took me years to be convinced, and a couple of years to change the habit.

Is the weapons policy "newly established" or only recently revised?

I would take out the references to taxes and child support. If you do not have children or are not divorced this sentence is meaningless and may confuse Mr. VP. IMO. Whether or not you are current on your taxes or child support doesn't have any bearing on your ability to defend yourself or use good judgement with firearms. This information would only add to the confusion to those unfamiliar with CHL laws.

If you are committed to submit this letter to your management, then I would also suggest that you be prepared and equally committed to have your resume updated and ready to go as well...

Not that I am saying this is not going to bode well for you, I hope it does, and that it sends the right message to your management and gets you some resolution on this issue you have...

Again, I'm not trying to shoot holes in this, I too believe that there are times when you need clarification on policies and other safety issues for folks in your position, that have to interact outside the office...

I'm sure we'll hear about the outcome either way, very soon...
