MONROE, Ohio - A top cop mistakenly shot himself in the thigh after giving his daughter a lesson in gun safety, police said.

Middletown police Chief Greg Schwarber, 54, was preparing to clean his Glock .45-caliber pistol on Friday and didn't realize the gun was still loaded, according to a police report.

Written by officers from neighboring Monroe, the report said the bullet entered Schwarber's leg just above the knee.

When officers arrived, they found the chief lying on the floor with a towel covering his leg. Schwarber was taken to a hospital for treatment.

The hospital had no record of Schwarber being treated or admitted. A home phone number for him couldn't be found.

The pistol probably had the "New York Trigger," but it also probably had the NYPD booger hook.

maybe I should design a device that makes a loud high pitched tone whenever you place your finger on the trigger of a gun.

I bet I could sell a ton of em to LEO lol.

He was the only one in that room with enough specialized training to handle that weapon.

Is it Glocks that require the trigger to be pulled before stripping?

If so, I could see how this design and a little complacency could spell disaster.

I've had a Glock since 1995 and never had an accident. With the fact that you have to pull the trigger to disassemble the weapon I always assume its loaded. I ALWAYS double check the chamber before breaking it down for cleaning.

Most people who own Glocks never will have accidents. Yet, I have wonder what in the were they thinking when they made trigger pull a part of disassembly.

All Glock design aside, anyone who will drop the hammer without first checking the chamber needs a refresher course. :rules:

It's a news clip. Are you even sure that it was a Glock? You know they never get any facts wrong, after all. Or demonize any particular (polymer) firearms over all the other BAD BAD guns.
Remember, in a life-or-death situation, when seconds count, the police are only minutes away.
