Authorities have released the name of the woman who was fatally shot early Thursday in northeast Dallas as her boyfriend was showing her how to handle a gun.

Karina Alverez-Castro, 19, was identified by Senior Cpl. Janice Crowther, police spokeswoman. The victim's name was unavailable earlier because her family had not yet been notified.

Her boyfriend, Chase Barton, 22, was being held Thursday at a Dallas County jail, according to records.

The incident was reported around 3 a.m. at an apartment complex in the 2900 block of Ruidosa Avenue, which is north of the intersection of Ferguson and Shiloh roads. The neighborhood is about three miles east of White Rock Lake.

Police believe Barton had tried to unload a .380-caliber semiautomatic handgun when the shooting happened, said Sgt. Ray Beaudreault, a homicide detective.

"She was on the couch across the room," Beaudreault said. "He worked the slide and he removed the magazine from the gun."
But, Beadreault said, Barton pointed the gun at the woman and pulled the trigger; a round was fired, which struck her in the chest.

"Obviously there was a round in the chamber," Beadreault said. "He pulled the trigger not realizing the weapon was loaded.

"He was totally reckless."

The woman was taken to Baylor Medical Center where she died, Crowther said.

Barton was facing charges for manslaughter and drug possession, Beadreault said, because a "sizable amount" of marijuana was found in the apartment.

Bail for Barton was not yet listed late Thursday morning, according to jail records.

That's the thing about "The Rules"

You have to usually break more than one to hurt/kill someone.

That's the cost of freedom; eternal vigilance. It's still sad when it happens.

The incident was reported around 3 a.m.... "sizable amount" of marijuana was found in the apartment.
Yeah, everybody teaches their girlfriend how to handle a pistol at 3 a.m.

You don't have to be Sherlock Holmes to read between the lines on this one.

Actually that isnt at all unusual. When the GF and I worked nights we did a lot of stuff backwards. Dinner was at 8am, shopping was done on days off at 2-4am, etc. A lot more night people (workers normally) exist than you think. BUT, in this case, yeah it was a bad cover story.

Eyeroll may have been the wrong smiley.

Nothing to do with what you had said, other than to point out that they do work nights....... :thumbs2:

Hence, maybe he should have taken a night off from "work" to get some training during the day....

Ok, was confused. Happens easily. The last thing I want is the bangers to start practicing! Safest place is standing right in front of them during their sideways Glock hold.
