1911 assembly Question..Help needed!
I'm sure this is simple for you 1911 people but on my first try to field strip/assembly, I can't get the slide to slide all the way.. It's catching the barrel link ( I think).. I have the kimber manual infront of me but maybe I'm just too dumb!!If you're local or with free long distance my cell # is 214-697-6144..Give me a howler if you got some tips....
Thanks in advance.

Hi Rey,
I am assuming that you have the slide stop out of the gun already and you've turned the barrel bushing and released the tension on the recoil spring by removing the recoil spring plug.
Also, the MAGAZINE must be OUT of the gun. If a mag is in the gun, the slide will never come off, empty or otherwise. Also, quadruple check the chamber to make sure it's empty.
If all of the above are done then pull back the slide a little and apply a little pressure to the trigger as you let the slide go forward gently.
Sometimes the little pin that engages the firing pin safety on the series II Kimbers can be a little cantankerous.
It might not let go on the first try, just wiggle it gently and it will come off.

This site has a pretty good description with photos. I've never gotten the videos to work, but click on the first picture and it will give you a pretty good description of the process.
That said, some of it is just figuring out how to make it work. The barrel link and slide need to be just right and then you kind of push in and up so it presses the plunger in at the same time. Ideally without scratching your frame &/or slide. Masking tape can be your friend here until you get the hang of it.
Good Luck, Enjoy!

Don't feel bad, stripping a 1911 does have a touch of black art to it! I probably shouldn't volunteer txinvestigator, but it would be a good idea to stop by his range on Mockingbird (DFW Gun Range). They can show you what you need to know and it's much easier to learn looking over someone's shoulder.
Regards,
Chas.

Don't want to seem like one trying to add to anothers good advice but you can be sure txinvestagator & his help will be more than glad to help you w/o making you feel uneasy. Read the post here about the range & the help given another member. Worked on his gun w/ a simple repair & no charge. You can't do any better than those guys.

Rey, I am only allowed to tinker with my 1911 when my wife is not home. She has stated on more than one occasion that my language goes south and every picture on the wall is in grave danger of the recoil spring.
Don't feel like the lone ranger
Taking it apart gets much easier after a time or two. I didn't see your post in time, but I could not have offered better advice than what you got from Tom.

Rey,
I did not see this thread in time, but I would have been more than glad to help !
I just went through the learning process on my new Kimber Untra Carry II, there is a trick to a couple of the steps. I spent a couple of hours taking it apart and re-assembling it, just to get the hang of it.
Being an older kind of fellow, I took the Kimber manual's diagrams and directions, put them in my copy machine and enlarged them as big as I could get them !! That sure helped, LOL

You're welcome from all of us. Reysc, and any others who may be new, young, trying a new thing after 45 yrs of shooting, or just having your 1st problem you can't figure out, this place will help you. Where do I fit in the above list? In the 1st problem after 45 yrs of shooting. I loaded rifle ammo 30 yr ago w/ a Lee hand loader. I restarted reloading. I never loaded any pistol ammo until 4yr ago. Had a couple of problems & the pros here walked me through them. Put pics on the screen for me & everything. The one thing no one every reads on this forum is, "that's stupid! All you gotta do is_______"
We all have life experiences that are able to help others. We all learn new things from the help of others. This is the place to do it. Keep the 1911 on you hip until you are FTF w/ friends at the range. Then get your stress relief.
See you in print.
