Looking for a scope

Hi,

I do not have much experience with scopes so I would like to query the members here for suggestions.

I have several military surplus bolt action rifles that I'd like to put scopes on. Now, I don't really want to do the drill & tap so I found some nice scout scope mounts that will replace the rear sight on many of them. The scope mount manufacturer suggests that I use a Pistol scope because it provides long eye relief. I am unable to decide what would be a good one to choose.

The first rifle I'm experimenting with is my Finn M39 (1968).

for starters, I would suggest picking up one or two low cost Leapers or NCStar scope to "experiment" with. They can be had for under 40 bucks, and are good on those older foreign made mil guns out to 100 yards. Low investment cost to experiment with.

My first thought is "how stable is the mount that just replaces the rear sight?"

Mr Surveyor, thanks for your suggestion. I was quite leery of NC Star but I may take a chance and try it out.

Ghostrider, I have done some research on this. Most of the forum members from Surplus Rifle agree that the scope mount from http://www.scopemounts.com/index.html?main.html is the best out there for my Finnish M39. Although the price is quite steep at about $88 for the mount I really need something since my eyes can't really make out targets very well out to 100 yards. I can't imagine some of the shooters who were hitting targets out to 1,000 yards!! I don't think I can even see anything that far away.

Burris makes (made?) a nice IER scope. However, you may want to consider a red dot scope if you don't need magnification. There are many decent quality reflex sights that may be had for less than a C-note, i.e. you don't need to buy an ACOG. I have good luck with the $40 Tasco red dots for plinking. I have my doubts about the $10 NCstar red dots, but at that price I've been tempted to give one a try.
