Renewal Process for Seniors?

Post by Crash »

I was recently told that if you are a senior citizen and already have a CHL, that you do not have to take either the written or shooting portion of the test. You simply fill out the application, have your fingerprints made, and send the application, the fingerprints, and the fee (now only $35 for seniors?) in.

Is this correct or was someone pulling my leg?

You don't have to be a senior citizen. What you need is to be on your 3rd renewal to qualify for the exemption from the class. If you qualify, DPS would let you know in your renewal notice.

Seniors (60+) get a 50% discount on renewals, change of address and new concealed handgun licenses. Same class.

Crossfire,

I did the initial training and got my first CHL in the late 90s and have renewed twice since then (and turned 60 just before the first renewal). So, the next time my license comes up for renewal, DPS will notify me of the change in how I do the renewal, right?

DPS was going to notify people that they don't have to take the class, but they aren't doing that. They will tell you if you call, but their not notifying people unless they ask.

That is directly opposite of what they told us in instructor renewal class.

Chas.
