Goldenrod for Gunsafe

Post by anygunanywhere »

I have a gunsafe and I use the silica gel driers that are regenerated by plugging them into an outlet (Remington brand).

I have been cosidering purchasing a Goldenrod to help keep my preciouses dry. Who here has one in their safe and how difficult was it to install?

Also, how many here have their safe bolted to the slab?

When I bought my safe, I seriously considered purchasing a Goldenrod but was effectively talked out of it by the salesperson. They told me that running any type of electrical wires in/out of the safe would affect the fire protection of my safe. Since fire protection was more important to me, I decided against it and used the silica bags...

My gun safe is in a small closet with no vents for heating/cooling. Rather than drilling a hole in the safe to install the Golden Rod, I simply fastened it to the bottom of the wooden shelf that goes over the top of the safe. It gets hot so you must be careful about what gets stacked on top of the safe but after 23 years, it seems to be doing a good job of keeping the humidity low enough that I have never had a problem with rust, either in the safe or anywhere in the closet.

I also have a deadbolt on the solid core door to the closet. Makes for a fine place to store other hunting goodies and ammo.

My safe is bolted to the floor.

I have put a bowl of Zeolite in the safe to absorb any moisture. Zeolite is a natural substance that can be purchased in most independant garden centers. It is primarily used in the garden to detox the soil. It is also used to absorb odors in an area as well as moisture.

The humidity stays at around 15-20% in the safe year round. I change the zeolite abouut every 3-4 months.

Good point on the fire protection.

I just unplugged the electrical cord running into my 2 month old Liberty safe. That was the best advice I got today!

Mrs. Anygun and I plan to move to Kerrville when we retire......the key word now is "when".

The house plans include Anygun's "shop" which is AC/heated and has room dedicated for two safes and a built in workbench.
