does anybody know if you can change the slide and barrel out from a 40 cal to 9mm

are the 9 and the 40 on the same frame

if so does anybody know where to buy a complete slide and barrel assembly

Changing both can cost more than a new gun. You may check directly with S&W, or order the parts from Numrich. Either way it will probably be $350+

Appears the magazines may be slightly different too so there's another cost.

The magazines are different. Academy has new Sigmas in both 9mm and .40 for $299 and there is a $50 rebate. Still the best value out there! Way cheaper and easier to just buy another gun, or swap with someone who has a 9mm.
