Something that helped my cause.
So I have my PIN waiting for my CHL. My wife still isn't exactly all that excited about the gun. Well last night, the family went to see the Christmas lights in College Station. I advised I wanted to take my gun with us since the shootings in Dallas, and we did. Well after leaving, we stopped by a gas station. When the wife and daughter got out of the car, my wife said 3 Mexican's were hollering at them. I am just thinking, guys will be guys. When they went into the store, I looked around and didn't see anything. I didn't hear anything either because I was listening to music. Well when they got back into the car, she said that scared her because they were flashing gang signs too. Well they were long gone by this time. I advised her, well that is why I wanted to bring the gun with us driving for the first time. Maybe now she will understand more.
P.S. Great forums and Merry Christmas.

Happy to hear she now understands. Maybe now would be a good time to talk to her about getting her CHL? If not, maybe at least some OC spray for your wife and daughters protection. Hopefully she's receptive.

You got the motivation correct. Lots of goblins and wannabees out there. Wife needs to get her CHL since you cannot be with her all the time. She needs to be able to protect herself and daughter if the need arises.
That said, if I understood correctly, you do not yet have your CHL in hand. Be real careful about carrying in the interim.
It would be a shame to get in trouble now that would prevent you getting the plastic.

You couldn't hear the taunts because you were listening to music? Are you familiar with the term "situational awareness"?

My words almost exactly. Not to mention, you let your family walk in to a Stop-N-Rob and didnt pay any attention to their walk.Oldgringo wrote:You couldn't hear the taunts because you were listening to music? Are you familiar with the term "situational awareness"?

By the time you could have realized something was wrong, it would have been to late for the gun to do you any good.
Its a good thing nobody was hurt.......or needed you to protect them........

Well the music wasn't that loud while parked and I did park right in front of the entry of the store. But it was a learning experiance by not knowing about situational awareness. That's why I came hear to learn. But as for carring, my CHL instructor said it was ok to put in glove compartment when traveling.

Yes, but it only has to be concealed, not put away like that. It's much better for accessibility to stuff it between the seat and console, next to the seat belt release, and put something like a cloth cap over it. I would restrict this to something that has either a long double-action trigger pull or a secure manual safety, though. This keeps it hidden, under your control, and in basically the same place as a strong-side holster, without the risk of forgetting to take it off when you get out of the car until you get the CHL.brentkhack wrote: my CHL instructor said it was ok to put in glove compartment when traveling.

Just an FYI, the gas station is the last place you should be listening to music and I certainly don't recommend sending your wife and child into the gas station/store at all.
Pay at the pump, drive away. If you need drinks, smokes, etc, go to a grocery store.

I am scared of empty guns and keep mine loaded at all times. The family knows the guns are loaded and treats them with respect. Loaded guns cause few accidents; empty guns kill people every year. -Elmer Keith. 1961

One caution here. If you are involved in either an auto accident or violent maneuvering during a road rage or similar incident, unless the gun is in the glove box, console, or a secured holster bolted to the vehicle it may well become dislodged from its concealment point and start sliding around inside according to the laws of physics. When you stop, it may be under a seat or out of reach and you may not be able to find it when you need it most.KD5NRH wrote:Yes, but it only has to be concealed, not put away like that. If anyone thinks this doesn't happen, I would suggest reading the account of the FBI's Miami shootout where an FBI agent died unarmed because he couldn't find the gun he had drawn and placed at his side in the vehicle just before a collision with the bad guys.

Well the reason we went to the gas station was because it was the first place available so they can use the bathroom. Not the best place, agreed, but they had to go. But trust me, I will be looking out a little better due to this and the advise from those who replied. I agree that for now, I will keep in the glove compartment until the CHL is in hand.
