Range Report 12/26

I had the day off today, so like any good citizen, I went to the range to sling some lead down range.

This was my first outing with my new Marlin 336 30-30 Lever Action Rifle. I'll just go ahead and say I am NOT going to scope this rifle. I took a few quick shots @ 25 yards and had sub 1" grouping with just the iron sights. I then took a few shots at 100 yards and was sub 3", again with iron sights. This rifle is extremely accurate right out of the box. I never once adjusted the rear sight and it was a blast to shoot!! I can't wait to get it out in the field for some hogs! If you happen to have a spare $379 sitting around burning a hole in your pocket, I'd highly recommend this rifle!

I also took out my 30.06 Remington for one last 'check' of my sights and it only needed one or two clicks on the scope, so I am very confident it'll serve me well!

In addition, you may recall my AR-15 issue where it was discovered I had a gas leak due to my bolt key being removed (by me) and not staying tight. Well, my homebrew re-stake worked like a charm and I was able to cycle about 30 rounds with no issue. I checked the bolt key and it was as tight as I last left it. So I was finally able to sight in my GunTec optics.

As for my range 'drama', it was quite comical (for those who saw it). As I was sitting there firing my Marlin, I felt a sharp sting on my large toe (yeah, I wore sandals...it was 85 degrees today) and immediately thought it was a fire ant. That was until the pain grew and grew. Well, I look down to find a Yellow Jacket stinging me! I kicked it off and, without thinking, stepped on it. Well, this must have called out the cavalry because within seconds, I was being swarmed by a ton of them. I am sure the garbage can 4 feet from me had quite a few of them in there. I laid the rifle down and ran...far. Some had followed me but then left. I looked over at my range bay and there were a TON of bees. I went into the office and got some RAID and sprayed down my area (the RO jokingly said "Shoot them!") It was quite a funny experience and still has me chuckling!

All in all, it was a fun day at the range! Beats a day of work!

Outstanding; well, minus the yellow jacket issue. I sure wish I could've got away to go shoot some. I have a match to shoot tomorrow and will have to go in cold as I didn't get to go practice any. Oh well, I'm glad you got to go.

I actually picked it up at Academy up on 1604 and NW Military.

I was contemplating shooting at the Bullet Hole, but have found A Place To Shoot to be MUCH better. It's about twice the distance for me, but so much better of a range.

Are you shooting Cedar Ridge?

I have a hunting buddy who keeps a derringer .22 loaded with rat shot in his truck in case he needs it for snakes/etc. We went dove hunting a little while back and found a nest with yellow jackets all over it in the tree close to us. He went and got his little derringer and dispatched the whole nest of them in one shot at a range of about a foot. It was a perfect pattern for the job.
