class III question

Post by atxgun »

If you build your own full auto AR or what ever else that might be class III, is that still legal if you go through the steps of getting a tax stamp and signed of by an official?

I ask b/c I was talking w/ a friend about the subject and how no new weapons in that category could be manufactured for civilian use after 1986. Was wondering if that covered DIY jobs as well.

There are plenty available (since 2004 & ban dropped) if you don't mind spending 15,000 - 35,000 and up depending on what you want/buy.

Unless you get a license to manufacture and start selling to government agencies, building an FA is likely to get you a stay in the Graybar Motel. You CAN build things like SBRs, AOWs, and suppressors by completing the proper paperwork beforehand, but full auto - no.

Now, I've heard that building one and keeping it for personal use is OK so long as no state lines are crossed . . . but I strongly suspect this is a viewpoint not shared by the government. (Sort of like the viewpoint that only gold is legal tender, so if you're not paid in gold, you owe no income tax, since legally you have no income.)
Original CHL: 2000: 56 day turnaround
1st renewal, 2004: 34 days
2nd renewal, 2008: 81 days
3rd renewal, 2013: 12 days

Well I'm not seriously considering getting one, was just wondering on the legalities involved if you built/converted your own.

If you're part of the ruling class you can but the peasants are not allowed to build or convert their own full autos and can't possess one made in the past 20 years because of the Reagan assault rifle ban.
Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.
