Beretta92: Opinions wanted
Been looking at a Beretta M92FS.
Would love to hear opinions, experiences, comments on the 92.
Any suggestions on upgrades, maintnance, etc?
What kind of accuracy are you getting?
Favorite ammo?
Thanks

Re: Beretta92: Opinions wanted
Pound for pound the best gun I've ever owned. Accurate out of the box, low maintenance, very reliable, you won't find a more durable firearm. I constantly fight rust with my other firearms, my 92FS is ten years old and looks brand new. Never had a FTF or FTE in those 10 years either.
As far as ammo, I've always used either Monarch or WWB in it. The Monarch is a little dirty, but the 92FS will fire anything. You can drop it in the mud and it will still fire. I guess that's why it was the chosen sidearm of many of our armed forces for so long.

M9 is our carry firearm, been deployed with it. It has taken a beating and in 5 years with the same weapon - no FTF/FTE (usually put 300 rnds/year through it). Pound for pound a good and reliable gun, it is just very big, hard to conceal (IMO).

I have the 92FS Its a great gun, shoots more accuratly than I do . Its reliable and has never had a misfire even with underpowered monarchs with my spouse limpwristing real bad. Feels real good in the hand. operation of the gun is real smooth. I will never not own a a 92. I shoot mostly Winchester white box, but have shot winchester 147 grain JHPs and Federal Premium Personal Defense 9mm 124 Grain Hydra Shok JHP Ammunition. all feed flawlessly. Federal is what I carry. Almost anyone can shoot this gun and shoot it reasonably well.
Flaws? Its big, and doesn't carry well. I seldom carry it on my person. When I do its in a bag, or small of the back. It is my car gun. I did a small review here you might want to check out.

It is extremely accurate...

Re: Beretta92: Opinions wanted
I have the 96, same thing in 40S&W.
I do like it, it does not need any work out of the box, and will eat anything I put through it. it was my #1 go to ranch gun. Hunting or 4 wheelers ect, I had it with me. Grip is just to big to hide. But it would run dirty so I kept it on me for pigs and what not.
Good gun for the money. But I say “was”, as I replaced it with a 1911 as my go to, not long ago.

Not a fan of it in general because I don’t like DA/SA guns and I think it’s unnecessarily bulky. Having said all that, I tend to agree that it works just fine for its intended role. It can be used for concealed carry as long as you use a good holster and dress appropriately.
The greatest sources of problems are poor maintenance and lack of lubrication. Keep it well lubricated, replace the recoil spring every 2500-5000 rounds and watch for cracks around the locking areas of the slide and the locking block itself. Beyond that remember that it’s a 30,000-40,000 round gun on average...Some can and will go further depending on what sort of use they’ve seen. Use only genuine Beretta magazines or buy them from Beretta’s supplier, Mec-Gar, at a slightly lower price.

When you take the time out of your day to beat someone, it has a much longer lasting effect on their demeanor than simply shooting or tazing them.

That said, I don't view that as a reason to discount the 92 as a carry gun. IMHO, we should be familiar with the mechanics of all popular handgun systems, and the manual decocker isn't completely going away any time soon.

Re: Beretta92: Opinions wanted
Went ahead and "bit the bullet". Picked up a 92FS.
Just back from first range session.
Fired 100 rounds factory Remington 115gr FMJ's
Accuracy: very very good! Even for my bad eyes it grouped right on the bullseye. No adjustment needed.
Was easy to shoot 2-3inch groups at 15yds.
Reliability: First 4 mags fired, fed and ejected flawlessly.
On the second box of ammo I had SEVEN failure to feeds! Fresh round got jammed going into the chamber.
A slight pull back on the slide and release fed the round.
Kind of bummed me out. I'm hoping it was the ammo.
Also assume the gun needs a good break in before it runs properly.
Will try some different brands of ammo to see if the problem persists.
I really like the gun overall.
P.S. I'm an old 1911 guy. That hammer drop safety makes me wet my pants every time it gets put on!

I had one at one time, WISH I NEVER SOLD IT! I would buy the 92FS if I was to buy a 9mm.
Re: Beretta92: Opinions wanted
Did you clean the gun first? If not clean it up lightly oil/grease it up and it should perform flawlessly ever after. My 92 never needed much of a breakin.Moonpie wrote:Went ahead and "bit the bullet". Picked up a 92FS.

I understand how you feel about safety hammer drop.

Re: Beretta92: Opinions wanted
As I and others have said, it's a great pistol; however, it's kinda' hard to get in your pocket. I sold mine so that I could get a Springfield XD 9 SC. Love my XD's!

Re: Beretta92: Opinions wanted
With the right gear the Beretta can be concealed. Just take a look at my signature. Yes it big and lardge but not impossiable to conceal.
