Age for pistol possession

Post by troglodyte »

I think I know the answer but I haven't been able to find the documentation to satisfy myself.

Is it OK for an 18+ year old to have a handgun in a vehicle?

I'm not talking about CC, I know the 21 age limit. Specifically I'm concerned about a couple of 20 year olds transporting a few inherited firearms from Dallas to Lubbock in the car.

I'll let someone else address the age question, but assuming that is not an issue for you then it is not illegal to carry in your car without a license. However it MUST be concealed, either on your person, in the glove box or what not.

IANAL, my understanding is they can own (gifted) and transport, but can't conceal.

buying rounds is a trick, and many ranges won't let him shoot, but if they are packed away property there should be no problems.

i always followed the three step rule,,, gun must be three steps from loaded, in case, in bag, ammo in different bag (i drive a truck so no trunk)

this is what a LEO told me when I was 18, back and forth to the farm, he also exclaimed there is some judgment call… Is it a clean cut kid doing what clean cut kids do, or some other type kid doing what kids should not do.

They can own one, and can carry one concealed in Texas under the car carry law (anyone who can own one can carry) but.....If they do get stopped it's gonna be a hassle if they search the car, but as long as they properly conceal and don't do anything that would get them in trouble in the first place then you're legally fine to go.

IANAL, but that's the general consensus on similar threads, and from different people's readings of the laws.

If they are just transporting them from Dallas to Lubbock, then I'd just unload them and lock em in the trunk and they'll be covered under Federal transportation rules.
