Re: GREAT LEO encounter
I see no problem with people patrolling. I imagine that BG's find nosey neighbors to be their single biggest concern.
I also agree that this was indeed a "good" LEO encounter.
I also think that paragraph-breaks are your friend.

I agree.MTICop wrote:Maybe I'm reading your post wrong but I don't understand how patrolling a neighborhood would be a bad thing for all involved. I routinely patrol my neighborhood and I am always armed with both my gun and a cell phone. I am not even close to looking for trouble but will have the means to defend myself if necessary. People walk around their neighborhoods all the time and I can act like that is all I'm doing until I get to a place where I can call the police. The bad guys case neighborhoods, convenience stores, etc., like this to see where the vulnerabilities are so they know the softest targets.
The purpose of the neighborhood watch is to be active in the neighborhood, not to be a vigilante. However, I go very, very few places without my gun so walking around the neighborhood would be no different.
If I misunderstood your post, I apologize but I just don't see where patrolling is a problem. Maybe the word patrolling is a bad choice of words but that's semantics to me. I look at my neighborhood outings as a recon patrol where if I observe a problem, crime, etc., I can back off and feed the information to the required people but can still defend myself if I get into a situation I can't get out of.

Alert residents who are vigilant both at home and when they are out and about are one of the biggest deterrents to criminals, and one of the biggest assets to police.
Taking responsibility for knowing the neighborhood and reporting suspicious people, vehicles, and behavior is the mark of a good citizen in my book.
I see no issue with being armed when walking around the neighborhood. It is clearly the prudent thing to do when crimes are known to be occurring with some frequency, and it is a logical extension of "Carry 24/7 or guess right." If anybody has the "guess right" part mastered, please clue me in on the secret.

XtremeDuty.45, I loved your post. I think it's great. . . nothing to be ashamed about being vigilant (notice there's no "e" on the end) to watch for threats against yourself, your family, your friends, or your neighbors. That's exactly what you're doing.
In regards to sharing CHL status, I don't tell strangers, but I tell a lot of acquaintances and all of my friends. I'll eventually tell most cops that I know in social situations. I don't do it in a way to suggest I'm superior, bragging, seeking special treatment, or harboring an ulterior motive.
Why do I tell them?
1) I'm not ashamed of it.
2) The more we can associate the lawful carrying of a concealed handgun in the minds of others with intelligent, level-headed, upstanding citizens, the better.
3) The more people hear positive things about guns, the less naturally biased against them they might become.
4) I'm a proselytizer for the causes of concealed carry and the 2nd Amendment in general.
5) Along with 4, I might find somebody interested in pursuing their own license who just needed to meet somebody with one to answer some questions and motivate them to press on with the certification.

I 100% support your actions ExtremeDuty .45
. It's called situational awareness, learned it in my teens. Don't let anyone make you think you have to explain your actions....especially on a forum. I was in support on the first post without you needing to explain after another "tried" to call you out. I support proactive rather than reactive behavior..... in sound judgment of course which I think you rightfully possess
I get folks like that on other forums I frequent. No matter.
I tell certain people that know me well, or I would be willing to protect like close friends, patrons @ my church that I CC only if the conversation arises, other than that they don't know. I don't hide that I have CHL. They never really know If I'm armed....if they ask I tell...but refuse to show especially if I'm carrying it.
I often walk/drive my block looking out for out of ordinary vehicles, shady folks walking through etc. or if a new renter moved in, how the traffic is in and out of the house.....do they have allot of "five minute friends" etc. It's become instinctive. I tend to quickly find out who drives what and how often by observation.
Three of my five physical senses (sight, smell, hearing) are a 360 degree look out for anything alarming....another (sixth sense) is intuition, vibes, gut feeling, past experience….however you may want to identify it.
Once I had to perform SD (got scars to prove it) @ a young age, and will do my very best to prevent it from happening again.

If guns cause crime, mine must be defective!!

Re: GREAT LEO encounter
ExtremeDuty.45, did you read this mornings Metro section of the Express News paper this morning about Justified shooting off to a fast start??? They mention a "tan SUV" circling the neighborhood suspiciously!!!

Re: GREAT LEO encounter
No I have not read that. Do you know where that is exactly? Or do you have a link to that article on the net?
Re: GREAT LEO encounter
Fickman,
Thank you! I agree with you on when and why I share my CHL status!

Re: GREAT LEO encounter
frogbones,
Thank you! I agree with you. I dont need to explain myself. I did just so that on the off chance that individual might say 'that makes sense' and hopefully he/she will become more vigilant in his/her area. You are right no matter where you are in person or on a forum there are always going to be 'those people'.

Thanks for the link. With any luck the thugs will get the hint that we are not playing around and that we WILL defend ourselves.
Re: GREAT LEO encounter
I like this article, it gives me warm fuzzies.
