Range Report GunCrafter .50GI

Post by rm9792 »

Picked up a Model 2 (2 designates railed) Monday. Fit and finish are outstanding, definitely well crafted. I ordered 100 rds from the maker along with reloading dies and brass. Right off, these rounds are expensive from the factory, even when you are used to buying .45ACP. Pistol has hard chrome finish, AlumaGrips, Trijicon front sight with MMC rear sight that is drift adjustable. Mags are 7 rounds with bumper and do extend slightly past the grip.

Loaded up 7+1 of factory ammo, 275g jacketed what look like semi-wadcutters. Recoil was similar to a hot .45, not bad at all, could stand an IDPA shoot with it if ammo was cheaper. I didnt have a rest and was shooting from 25yds standing and made 3-4inch groups COM of target. Gun will shoot better in better hands I am sure. Loaded up and shot 7 more in rapid fire to see if it would malfunction and had no issues. Pretty good to me considering it hasnt been "broke in" yet. Rounds were thrown about 3 feet to the right in about a 6 foot circle.

Loaded my own reloads, 325g Speer JHP ( I use these in my Desert Eagle) with 8.5g of PowerPistol using CCI Magnum primers. Definite difference in recoil and sound. Barrel kicked up about 4 inches higher than factory loads but was tolerable. Oddly the POI was the same except groups opened up slightly but that was probably me again. Rounds were tossed same distance but were thrown slightly forward of my position, a littel strange.

Pistol fit well in a Fobus RotoHolster designed for railed 1911's and in the belt holster included in Springfield's Gear package. Bonus on the Springfield holster is that it has a rail on it to carry a light or laser in case you need it. I carried it around all day as CCW and was a bit heavy but tolerable so far.
Dissasembly is similar to the Kimber Ultra. It is a coned barrel so you need to use the takedown tool to hold the recoil spring captive but everything else is the same as any other 1911. Ejector is sitting crooked, possibly due to the rebated rim.

Pros: Big bullet coming out, JHP .50 is quite a slug at 900fps. Well made with one exception listed below. Fits standard railed holsters, standard 7+1 capacity. Flat MSH with lanyard mounted internally. Reliable from 1st shot. No FTE, FTRB, Etc. Uses standard bullets so some savings there. brass is .39c each from GunCrafter but if you police your it wont be too bad to shoot.

Cons: Heavy, no scale to test but feels heavy. Barrel Hood is scratching badly from rubbing on the lugs which to me indicates they are getting false lockup and using too long a link. Cost!! This setup was $3200 with nite sights and Chrome finish which is inline with other high end pistols but wow. Mags are not standard so probably only source is GunCrafter. Mags also stick out some which might give you concealment issues.

Overall I like this gun and as a fan of big bores it definitely is a keeper.

Seems well fitted, no space between parts, back of slide even with ejector.

Not happy with this. My carry Kimber Pro CDP has 1000's thru it and no scratches.

Thats a big hole!

Round comparison, .45ACP on the right.

Thanks for the write up! I have been toying with getting a conversion for a G21.
