38 Special Nyclad HP Ammo

Does anyone have feedback concerning this old round being reintroduced by Federal? It seems to have a legion of loyal followers who swear by it. The 125 grain bullet sheathed in nylon has around the same velocity as the 125 grain 38 Special Remington Golden Saber. How can the Nycald's be rated non +P while the Remingtons are +P?

Near as I can find out, the basic idea behind the Nyclad was simply to reduce lead fouling in barrels. Yet is has a reputation rivaling the legendary 158 grain LSWCHP. Expansion in the 38 caliber Nyclad is said to be nearly 100 per cent reliable.

It expands because there is no copper jacket to add strength. It is essentially a lead hollowpoint with a nylon coating to, as you said, prevent leading.

I've shot them into water jugs and wet newspaper, and liked them. Never into flesh.

If they are indeed being brought back, Federal will sell all they can produce. They developed a following - based on actual shootings or not. A lot of products are revered and sought after, whether or not they are actually that much better than another product.

They're in all of my .38's, but I wouldn't shoot them because I couldn't replace them.

In the original versions, there was a +P load.

This would be great news to me.

I kinda liked the stuff. If its coming back, that'll be a good thing. If they are available, I'll buy enough this go-round to last a while longer. Amongst others, they'll be in my bride's Cobra.

I still like the Remington 158 LSWCs.

Ammunition for lightweight short barrel revolvers is getting kinda revolver specific though.

Heavyweight (relatively) all steel short barrel revolvers like Rugers and Mdl 60s, etc., may play nice with limited amts of spiffy Plus P 158 Lead HPs.

The ultra light weights from Smith have a disclamer that only midweight JHPs be used in factory Plus P loads.

Bear in mind here that I'm not talking about using a long tube K-38 to ring steel gongs at 100 yds.

I dunno. Hopefully I'll never find out. At contact (knife) distance, five rounds of any kind of 36 cal would, maybe, be enough to convince the attacker to change their mind.

Wasn't this the old "Treasury Load" bullet? I think that ammo was loaded to +P+ though.

I chronographed a number of "P" and +P rounds thru my Hi Power and Kahr pistols a few years ago, and discovered then that +P does not necessarily mean increased velocity, and vice versa. It is generally true, but not always.
