The tight-knit community of DeLeon is grieving over the accidental shooting death of a 10-year-old boy Saturday.

Aaron Salinas died instantly after he was shot in the face with a rifle Saturday morning while at a neighbor’s house.

“As far as we can tell, this was an accident - a terrible tragedy,”
Comanche County Sheriff Jeff Lambert said. According to the report, the
sheriff’s department received a 911 call shortly before 11 a.m. Saturday. When deputies arrived at the scene, the victim was already deceased. Witnesses reported that the victim’s older brother was handling the rifle when it discharged, striking the younger boy.

Lambert said the gun reportedly belongs to the older brother and is used for hunting. He said no charges are expected to be filed in the case.

DeLeon Superintendent Dr. Randy Mohundro said students were not in school Monday, but that counselors will be on campus today to help them deal with the death of one of their own.

“It is a tragedy,” Mohundro said. “As a community we strive to reach out to the family and our students to help them deal with the grief and loss.”

Mohundro said Salinas was a good student and well liked among his peers. He was a fifth grader at Perkins Middle School in DeLeon and played basketball.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. today at The First United Methodist Church in DeLeon.

Really a sad, sad story and the activist will turn it around and blame the gun for doing this. Accidents do happen, regretfully. Prayers for the family dealing with their loss.
