My 13-year old son has finally agreed to go shooting with me. I brought the subject up with his Mom, stating that I wanted to start him off with a safety-class. I was surprised to hear her say that she was thinking about him having firearms training, too.
Anyone have recommendations for a good entry-level firearms and handgun shooting class in the NW Houston/Spring area?

You may consider starting with the Texas Hunter Safety course.

Re: Son says he wants to learn to shoot
I have been Googling my brains out with no luck.
I do not want a Hunter Safety course, I am looking for a basic handgun intro/safety course that a precocious 13-year old can handle (he shows no interest in long-guns, yet). I cannot find anything of the sort listed. Does anyone have any experience with such?

What you want is an NRA certified handgun safety instructor. Just call all the ranges in your area and ask.
I know that Charles Cotton teaches that course in Pearland, but I don't know how often.
There are non-NRA instructors who are perfectly decent, but if you don't know one personally, NRA certification is the best way to check their qualifications.
I hope your son has fun. The family that shoots together stays together.

Great suggestion by Seamus.
Here is a link to the different instructors on the PSC website:

I have been in classes with Charles Cotton and Marc Gentine and they are both top notch and would be great with a 13yr old.

+1 on the NRA courses. I put my wife through the NRA pistol course and my youngest daughter and son through the NRA rifle course. It helped all of them become much more comfortable with guns and started ingraining the safety rules into them.
