Shot guns for Left-Handers???

Post by Rockrz »

I was just curious if anybody knows what the best options are for left-handed
shooters when it comes to shotguns.

I'd like to get a nice automatic or pump and get back into a little bird hunting
(used to do alot of hunting as a kid, young adult)

I can't remember for certain, but it seems the 12 guage my dad got me when
I was in junior high released the spent shell out the bottom, and I think
it was an Ithaca gun. Does this sound right?

What other options are available to me for shotguns?

Remington makes shotguns in left-handed configurations. Some people have done some (ahem) interesting things with them.

http://www.remington.com/products/firearms/left-Hand/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

OTOH, if you go for a SxS or O/U shotgun (since hunting is your interest), they're ambidextrious.

I can't find any Mossbergs for lefties. Ithaca and Browning also make left-handed shotguns.

OK, so I guess I did remeber correctly that it was an Ithaca that I had as a kid.
I hocked the thing when I moved out of the house, and of course I wish I still had it now.

I was kind wanting either an automatic, or a pump.
And, thanks for the info. I'll watch for Remington, Browning, and Ithaca.

I do have a Remington Sportsman 48 that my grandpaw left me, but I think
it shoots the shell out of the right side which doesn't work for me.

It's in decent shape. Reckon it's worth anything?

I noticed on the Remington website that this model was discontinued
back in 1968 so maybe it's of enough value to sell or trade for something
that would work for me.

They appear to go for somewhere between $200 and $300 on gunbroker. If you're interested in selling, I may be interested in buying. I've been looking for a good shotgun for hunting. What's the gauge and overall condition? If it's 16ga, I'm quite interested.

You're correct about Ithaca; they're "bottom-eject" actions. The Ithaca safety on the M37 is behind the trigger guard and moves from left to right.

No, it's a 12 guage and it's probably going to need some restoration.
My grandpaw was a great guy, but apparently didn't have much
interest in cleaning guns after he shot them.

But, this gun had very little rusting inside the barrel which
is why I grabbed it. I've never shot it, so I need to take it
to a gun shop and let them look it over and tell me what
they would recommend.

Thanks on the confirm about Ithaca...

Are those considered to be good guns compared
to Browning and Remington?

I believe that they are every bit as good (or better) as the other major brands. My M37 was made in the 1960's and has great wood on it. Some folks don't like them because it's impossible to fit a magazine extension on them.

I assume that is to have more rounds available, right?

I thought they had regulations on how many shells
could be in a shotgun.

Of course I'm assuming this does matter if you
are using it for self defense inside your home,
but wouldn't it apply when out hunting?

Right.

The magazine capacity of shotguns matters only when the shotgun is used in hunting. For other purposes (such as home defense), one does not have to worry about the round count of a shotgun's magazine.

As a lefty, I like an O/U.

I also enjoy my Browning BPS, it ejects out the bottom and has a thumb safety ( top of the action),,, truly ambidextrous. But have had a few right handed models of various long guns and you learn to work them, , , it almost does not matter after a bit.

I have never shot an auto that I enjoy as much as my O/U.

Thanks for the tip on the Browning BPS.
I'll have to check those out.

I may like automatics due to being lazy.
Kinds like my trucks...I started out driving
manual trannys, but once I got in an
automatic, I knew that was for me!

I'll second or third the comments on the Browning BPS. Mine has worked well and I'd get one again if I were shopping for a pump action shotgun.
