Ineed Info Quick On carrying In Parks

Post by Daltex1 »

I know there has been changes recently made to the right to carry in parks. My work is having a non-sponsered camping trip being planned tomorrow and I was wondering which parks are CHL friendly. The reason they say its "non-sponsered" is for the legal aspect for them to not being responsible for anyone bringing alcohol and having something happen. I do not drink but I would like to take my pistol. Does anyone know of a place that is near the Dallas-Ft worth area that fits this criteria? I would want to say less than an hour to an hour and a half drive. I will be using a tent but I am sure other people at my work would want a cabin(wimps!) :tiphat: . All help is appreciated as I would like to suggest a place that will allow me to carry legally. Thanx to all that respond.

You can carry on/ in any Government-owned (read: owned by you) property to your heart's content. The only exceptions are as laid out in the law: courthouses, schools, etc. You can even carry in the State Capitol.

National parks are okay too, despite the impression that the MSM wants to give you that the Obamessiah rescinded that new rule change with a wave of his almighty hand.

BUT, you can't carry on Corp of Engineer land, which is on a lot of the lakes around here. State parks are OK. :thumbs2:

Hidden Cove on Lake Lewisville would be nice as it accomodates tents and RV's; civilization is nearby in case someone needs something from the grocery store or pharmacy. They have a boat ramp for those w/ boats and also offer boat rentals. BUT.... it is on a COE lake and you would have that issue for carrying (it would not be allowed).

Eisenhower State Park on Lake Texoma should fit your criteria

Not to throw a wrench in it but - Hidden Cove is a park leased from the Corps of Engineers = no carry -- Lake Texoma is a Corps of Engineers property as well and = no carry. Remember, any park or wildlife area that is licensed to the State, a local municipality (like The Colony), or even private parties, is still subject to the "no guns/no carry" regulatory authority of the US Army Corps of Engineers.

Usually, you can find out quickly that a park or wildlife area is on leased or licensed lands by checking the TPWD website and reading the park info/history, and/or check the park info on the US Army Corps of Engineers district website managing that particular jurisdictional area (Lake Lewisville = Fort Worth District; Lake Texoma (including the Texas side) = Tulsa District).

Ok I am ignorant in this area and its a shame as I am a big outdoorsman and love to hike. I hope that any replies to this post will help me and the OP.

If I am not mistaken you can carry in state parks...unless it is a C.O.E. area or leased bt the C.O.E. Also you can carry in national parks. Please correct me if I am wrong in my understanding.

NOTE: You can carry in state and national parks so long as that state or national park is within a state that recognizes your license.

Unless I read your post wrong (or if I am wrong somebody will say so) - you are correct.

Want to throw another wrench in it? Lake Sam Rayburn is a Corps of Engineers (no guns) property - however, big chunks of the land around the lake (right up to the shoreline) are the Sabine and Angelina National Forests managed by the US Forest Service property (concealed carry is OK (unless specifically stated)). Someone could think they were on USFS land and be OK but accidently walked past a boundary onto USACE land.

This is a real problem.

I think the reality is that the COE land should fall under the same rules as the regular national parks, OR it should at the very least be required to abide by normal private-property law in TX (have to post 30.06).

You can take this for what it's worth. I called Eisenhower State Park. The park ranger stated you can carry in the park under CHL authority. If he stops you for speeding you have to show your CHL just as with any LEO. Then I called the COE at the Denison Dam, she stated you can not carry on any corp property which we knew, then I questioned her about Eisenhower, which she stated that would fall under their rules even though leased from the Corp. If true, that would also make all of Lake Ray Roberts a carry area. :headscratch

No wonder these rules are confusing.

The COE rule seems to be in effect for any property owned by the COE regardless of whether it is leased to someone else or not. I would appreciate any further clarification of this. The attendants at the park may not know the rules. At the COE lake near me, the attendant is a "Park Host" or "Steward" and routinely there are volunteers in the booth and answering the phone. But the official contact is a COE official and in an email response he told me in no uncertain terms that concealed carry was strictly forbidden at every COE property in the USA, no exceptions, and without regard for local or state law.

This is what I got back in 2006 from USACE Headquarters office of counsel (as a private citizen) when I asked about Corps land vs TPWD leased/licensed lands.

Are the laws quoted in that letter separate from those recently repealed? I guess I'd like to know what portion of the law was amended - hey, maybe it clears us for the post office too. "rlol"
