Came THIS close..........

Man vs. Dog.......man won

I'm shaking like a leaf. Adrenaline pumping so dang hard I have a headache. On to the story........

I went in for a checkup. I injured my back last week on the job and have been laid up. Pain is killing me. Well, I went in for my checkup. Hurts to holster up so I took the man bag and assured myself it was ok since it contained a few pounds of Italian steel. Upon my return I was irritated to find I had hit lost my garage remote in teh truck somewhere and rather than find it, I headed for my front door. As I rounded the corner, I was greeted my the biggest, ugliest snarling dog I can ever recall seeing. I couldn't run.......I knew that, so I backed slowly only to have it creep towards me and bark. I drew my pistol and clicked off the safety. It started to run and I squeezed the trigger slowly. All of a sudden (as if it knew its life were about to end) it stopped and trotted off out of sight. I headed indoors and looked down to see my pistol at half cock. That dog doesn't know how close he came to being a statistic. It's the second time I've had to draw on an animal and it's becoming a problem. Guess people can't afford to feed their dogs and are letting them loose. Who knows. If it were my kids out there, I hate to think of what might have happened. Anyway, all safe and sound. had to correct a million typos because after a few minutes, my hands started shaking. whew........man it gets the blood going!!

For the inquiring minds, my gun of choice today was a full size Beretta 92 Stock with 18 round flush fit mag using CorBon DPX 124gr.

Glad to hear you are alright. Do you live in a rural area or something? How many dogs are just out and wandering about there?

Good to hear that you're safe and that the dog recognized his predicament soon enough. I hope that you back soon gets better.

So glad to hear you fared well. It sounds like you called it real close, but you still called it. Good job.
I hope I would be as aware and on top of the situation. :thumbs2:

Glad to hear things came out ok..

We have the same problem with dogs here. They harass the calves pretty often, I typically lose 2-3 a yr because of dogs.. I love dogs, I like them better than people in most cases, and I hate nothing more than to shoot one. There are times it cant be avoided though. Whether it's for survival, or just fun it's just got to be done.. Either people dumping them, not taking care of them, or the dogs just got loose and having some fun.. Once 1 starts, other dogs around will gang up and start doing it, it's a bad deal.

I have had a few dogs come after me, but not here on the ranch. They are typically out with the animals.. Ever since I got my German Shepard, that crap has stopped. Hope it stays that way, and she doesnt start doing what these other dogs are doing instead of continuing to keep them away.

I caught a guy dumping a black lab a few weeks ago. A over weight, old dog, I'm sure vet bills were getting expensive due to it having trouble moving around. I got his plate number and called the Sheriff's, I also tailed behind him pretty far to make sure he didnt get away. I came really close to confronting him ( it's a subject that really ticks me off ), but my better judgement took hold.. The dog was taken to a adoption center.. The guy was pulled over, and I'm not sure what happened after that. But I do know that Sheriff's around here take it VERY seriously, they all pretty much know me and know my thoughts on the subject, so I can say for sure there was no slap of the wrist involved. I've caught a few doing it, but not nearly enough.

Perhaps when this type event occurs a call to the dog pound (or whatever it's called now...?) would be in order. No, they may not find him, but they might...

Since you didn't shoot the dog, the next person without a gun (as you pointed out, it could be a defenseless child) might not fare so well.

UPDATE: We had some new neighbors move in and I found out it was their beloved poodle. Didn't look like any poodly I've ever seen. This dog was huge! Anyway, big ol' Fifi is happily back home with his family and I saved one round of CorBon DPX. They said he's a loving dog and wouldn't hurt a flea. I beg to differ.......anyway, the owner (who also carries a Beretta ;-) ) and I are on good terms and there's no hard feelings. All's well that ends well. He should be signing up here on the forum shortly....

LOL at the poodle! Well, not really...there are quite large poodles and schnauzer doggies out there...I would've never believed it unless I had seen them in person myself. As an aside, I have a great dane, appropriately named Samson, he's HUGE, 180+ lbs...stands taller than me when he's just on his hind legs (and I'm 6')...every now and then he gets loose...I know that he wouldn't hurt a fly, well, he'd chase it...but all he would do is lick you, but what I worry about it him knocking someone over, many times when he is approached, or you approach him, he will stand on his hind legs (kangaroo style) to get eye level with you, give you a kiss/lick/sniff and that's it...if you've ever seen the Marmaduke cartoons...they're real, I swear! :biggrinjester: Fortunately he's met everyone in the neighborhood.

I did have a run-in with a badger once, years ago...it was at night...walking around checking out the wildlife in rural Arkansas, using my flashlight to spot the glowing eyes I came across deer, racoons, a mountain lion, but what took the cake was a badger...WOW...it badgered me! In a flash I had my Glock drawn and the badger lit up, all the while I was backtracking as fast as I could...about 10 feet back the badger decided that he'd protected his territory far enough and back he went...WHEW...my heart was beating F A S T !!!

We have issues with a certian full size skunk that frequents my porch area. I thought I was going to have to shoot it one night. I swear, me and these local animals just don't get along or something.

Skunks - cute until, well, they raise the tail! Used to live up North, we had a Siberian Husky that brought home the animals - skunks, hedgehogs, etc...he didn't mind the smell of dead skunk, oh, it was AWFUL! I think he actually enjoyed the stench of dead skunk judging by the number that he brought home.

Hurt? Some of them are down right hospitable to the local fleas!
