1911 Carry Condition

Somewhat to my suprise, my foray into 1911 type pistols (a Rock Island compact) has proven itself reliable enough to be used for carry. I have put 500 rds through it including 300 fmj and 200 hollow point without a single malfunction.

Having used Glocks, revolvers and other DOA semis for carry in the past , I am curious as to what state the 1911'ers carry their handguns in. Having habitually carried my glocks with one in the chamber I am leaning towards "cocked and locked" but am curious as to what others do.

Cocked and Locked is how it was designed.
I carry that way when I am hunting. (No CHL yet...)

If you're not comfortable with cocked and locked, get another gun. Any other way is either too slow or dangerous. Cocked and locked is NOT dangerous at all if the operator does his part.

I carry the way God inspired JMB to design the gun to be carried. Condition 1. Anything less makes it a club. ;)

Always cocked and locked. Not every potential situation you could encounter might allow you the time or free handed ability to rack the slide.

Kinda like carrying a revolver with an empty chamber up next in rotation.....

Cocked and Locked.

Have carried 1911s that way for more than 40 years with great satisfaction... it is also the safer way to carry....

Why would you carry a "DOA semi?" I would understand a DAO semi, but a DOA would be a small club.

OK,thats pretty much what I thought. I carry my GLocks (yeah, I know boo...hiss) with a round in the chamber so I can't see any reason not too with the 1911.

I am suprised that I feel as comfortable as I do carrying it - I thought the weight would bother me more, have to see how it feels after carrying it for the entire day.

I am very pleased with the Rock Island, seems very nice for the money. ABout the only thing I don't care for on it is the sights

+1 for all of the above. Sights are easy to replace. That will be a great improvement also. Glad to see you trade up.

Nope, didn't trade up - just added a new member to the family! It will be fun to have something I can customize. Not much you can change with Glocks, other then a little trigger work; they sure are reliable though. I think everyone needs some of each.

So many guns, so little cash!

Nothing wrong with Glocks, but I prefer 1911s.

My EDC gun is a Kimber Ultra Carry in .45ACP. I carry it in Condition One.

Everyone is correct. Let me add if you will practice (unloaded) gun off target, finger off trigger, and safety on. Gun on target, finger on trigger, and safety off. You will not have any problems. IMO

I might be the only one who carries in condition 2... but that is because I carry a Para Ord LDA model which means that you can't carry cocked anything because it doesn't stay cocked. If I had a single action 1911 it would be condition 1 all the way.
