Gun from Family Member who is Out of the Country - HOW?

I have a relative who lives in South Africa. He owns a small pistol that has been in the family for a couple generations. The South African government is requiring them to get new licenses or turn the gun in. The license fee is of course obscenely expensive. He would rather give the gun to me. The pistol is nothing special but things are so corrupt there that it will end up in some captain's personal stash so we're trying to figure out how to get it over here.

So, can he just send it in a FedEx box or do I have to send it to a dealer and get it transferred?

I tried to do a search for this topic but I really didn't know what terms to search for.

if the SA government is already aware of him owning the weapon, wouldn't it be rather risky if it just "disappeared". Also, I think for rour relative's sake, I would be more worried about the laws of SA when it comes to moving a weapon out of the country.

also, I think you may need to do some serious research on bringing a firearm into the US

I believe you will need to find a dealer who can legally import weapons into the US. I am not sure, but I think it requires a special class of license and the average storefront dealer will not have it. Your local dealer should be able to help you find out what is needed and who can help.

What he said your importing a weapon from overseas and the cost of doing so is probably not worth it
