The tribunal that tried Marine veteran Jeffery Maxwell laughed after suspending him from Western Oregon University and sentencing him to:

a "psychological evaluation stating he is not a threat to himself of others" and

a mandatory "ten page paper" " with references, "citing, but not limited to:
1) the importance of following the law,even through civil disobedience.
2) the importance of accepting responsibility for one's actions
3) and recognizing the impact possession of weapons on college campuses has on others."

Something somewhat related to this topic about goofy college trials, I happened to part of one as some of my friends had to go through this. Omitting the reason they were in this mess, they were not criminally charged by the police but the hippie school 'jury' tried to have them suspended for at least a year. I got dragged into the situation because I was present the night of the incident (although not partaking in said incident) and got questioned by this 'jury' and it was a total mockery. These kind of people live in la-la land. And that's no exaggeration.

From what i saw in this article Jeff Maxwell does not have to do anything.
-the staff member was not his teacher so it can't be considered an assignment (doing that would not be fair because the other students were not required to do it so he could take that up with the Dean)
-the Prosecutor the so called "Acting Coordinator of Campus Judicial Affairs" might have some power but if it is perfectly legal even on campus he still can't do anything.
-the other students there is the only hint of fairness but it obviously did not make any difference no one knew what was going on anyway

The suspension and the paper are not required. Their trial really was a sham.

Luckily the county saw the light and dropped all charges. His right to appeal means the higher court ruling stands and he does not have to do anything. He should have never had to deal with any of this in the first place.

Unless Western Oregon University is the only school in the area that has his desired major, he should just tell the school to pound sand and take his G I Bill money elsewhere. (IMHO)

I have to agree with this statement. I would never have sat in a room with a bunch of folks with no standing and let them heap abuse and ridicule.

I think it would be tough to start over in a degree program, or just give it up. If he just gives up the school doesn't care, but he has to pay the consequences for years to come.

If the school is properly accredited, transferring credits to another accredited school should be no big deal.

If enough students decide to move their programs elsewhere, it would affect the school's tuition income and, eventually, the income from the state legislature (assuming the school is state-supported -- with a name like Western Oregon University, I'd bet on it).
