I dunno, somebody has to take care of the guns on the boats, and that's what I did for almost four years, from 5" 38s down to .30 Carbines.

I also was responsible for training the crew in small arms handling and marksmanship, but that was the old Navy.

Stupidity is present in all segments of society.

Blows me away...I can't bring myself to point a gun at anyone. Heck, I can't point a toy gun at someone without feeling guilty. That is no kidding. I have been around firearms all of my 48 years and my conditioning just won't permit it. If I see anyone even getting close to pointing a weapon at someone, I explode on them.

Maybe this is why I feel there is some kind of monkey business going on here.

With it being a guy with military training, I am somewhat suspicious of his story. I would not be surprised if he didn't kill her on purpose and then cook up the accident story to keep from getting the chair. I find it hard to believe he would be so stupid. If it were my daughter dead...that guy would never see the court room.

I agree it's entirely possible this guy made up a false line to cover himself on what might be a murder case Or it could be a classic case of criminally negligent homicide/involuntary manslaughter as stated. I say this only because my experience has been LE or military status does not exclude anyone from doing something stupid and/or immature and reckless. Ask anyone who has been to Thunder Ranch, Gunsight, or even Paul Howe's CSAT and most can tell you of at least one experience with active LE and military doing something that most of us would consider to be reckless and stupid.

If you take a class where you have to live with a gun on you all day, sooner or later you will get tired and make a mistake. Guys get swept with muzzles all the time. It's something to be avoided but it does happen. But with young guys especially, you are more likely to come across someone who hasn't yet fully matured and frequently fails to maintain proper bearing for any given situation. These are the guys you see pointing M16s at each other in photos from the sandbox. The good news is most unit are good at kicking idiots like that out before they become a problem. Unfortunately, that just makes it the next unit commander's problem until something like this happens.
