DPS No Longer Taking Phone Calls For CHL Status

Post by Kawabuggy »

I don't know if anyone has tried calling recently to check on status of your CHL, but now when you call, it is a voice recorded prompt-WITH NO OPTION FOR "0" FOR OPERATOR-with specific questions about photos, fingerprints, requirements, etc; But NO option for checking status, and no way to reach a person to inquire unless you choose one of the other options and then hope that they will help you.

I am now almost at 300 days of "Processing Application". I'm not amused that they no longer want to hear from me by phone.

One thing that did really stand out in my mind was option #9. And I'll quote "To ask if a particular individual has a concealed weapons permit, please press 9".. Does this mean that employers, or just anyone with a desire to know, can call DPS and they will release that information? What is really going on with this?

Maybe I should call back, and choose option 9 and inquire about myself... Think I'll do that right now.

Okay, I called back the 1-800-224-5744, but this time Keelee answered. She said my app is processing, but Maryanne has my file and that she had to xfr me to Maryanne's voice mail. Of course, Maryannes voice mail is the black hole from which no information ever escapes... I don't expect a phone call back from Maryanne anytime soon. Time for me to start calling the offices of my elected officials.

no, they changed the law a few years ago so that "anyone" can't just find out if you have a CHL.

"anyone" is in quotes, because there's LEO's and what not that can.
FWIW, IIRC, AFAIK, FTMP, IANAL. YMMV.

Start???? :confused5
I'm surprised you didn't do this at day 120 or so.
You are way over due.

I would skip strait to asking for a hearing as to why they have denied your license, because from the letter of the law they have in every way.

Get a Utah license.... takes about 45 days from the time you mail it.... Texas needs to get there stuff together.... or dont do it at all... Oh and I got pulled over on the way to Dallas from Houston last week DPS was nice and had no issues with my permit from Utah or my gun. D
Thanks David

I got the Utah license at the end of last year. Took almost exactly 60 days from door to door.

Yours is very overdue. Several of my friends to told me the processing has sped up because they got their results in 1.5 months. Both live in Houston.

DoubleJ, Crossfire, Charles Cotton and myself will be at the TSRA function tonight in Mesquite...There will be a lot of movers and shakers there tonight and tomorrow...

I have a feeling this and a few other things will be bantered about and some after action reports being posted here over the weekend...

300 days and no plastic...That sir is an extreme problem, and one that deserves more than a route to a voicemail...Thats a door that needs to be kicked in with all due prejudice!!!

*UPDATE* 1 phone call yesterday, and I have my plastic in hand this afternoon.

I called my local representative and they called DPS on my behalf, and within a couple hours I had received a message at work that Deidre from DPS was calling for me. I called her back and left a message on her voice mail. She returned my call within the hour to tell me that my plastic was in her hands, and wanted to confirm the address to over-night it.

I don't regret waiting as long as I did. I never lost my temper, or got upset. I knew going in that it would take some time. Most good things in life normally do.

All's well that end's well.

There's "some time" and there's RIDICULOUS. You were far past "some time." I congratulate you on your patience, it's saintly.

How do you find who your "local representative" is?

My wife's app is no where close to the length of yours, but there are people posting they have their permits, when they sent their paper work in after she did. She has talked to the people at DPS, and while they were really nice about it, they told her that everything is done, just waiting on a 'sign off' on it...

It looks like she may be headed down the same road, and I want to have the number ready when the time comes.

Try this link to find your elected representatives at the state level:
