My Mother, two kids, and myself were headed out to get some lunch and my car was hit from behind. Everyone was properly buckled in and we are all fine except for a little soreness mostly with the adults. I can't say the same for my car. It appears to be toast. The occupants of the hitting car were shaken and also seemed unhurt.
Well I pulled over called 911 then helped push the other car out of the roadway. DPS arrived an I gave the trooper my insurance, DL, and CHL. Through out the investigation, which seemed to go on for almost an hour, he never mentioned my CHL or even asked if I has a gun. My Kel-tec was in my front pocket.
The trooper completed the investigations, both cars were towed, citations were issued to the other driver and she left. By this time another trooper had arrived. The first turned to me and asked if I had ever been arrested for marajuana in Decatur county. My jaw dropped like a rock. Uh, NO! ( no I didn't yell at the trooper, that would be dumb) He went to his car. When he came back he told me that there was a warrent out of Decatur County and I fit the description then placed me in handcuffs. My wife was there, and fotunately my son was in my wife's car with AC and my Mom so he couldn't see. I was shocked, my wife was shocked, neither one of us even know where Decatur Co. is.
I the end it was all cleared up that I wasn't the right person. I have to give both troopers a lot of credit. Both were very professional. Neither were accusing or treated my badly at any time. I know they were just doing thier job and I even told them such. Both took a lot of time and went through several channels to make sure they had the correct person. They could have taken me down to wherever they would have taken me and dealt with it then. Heck they could have let me be shipped to Decatur County (wherever that is) and let it be dealt with then. I appreciate the way the handled the case.
With reguards to the CHL and my gun. As I said earlier, the trooper seemed to ignore the fact that I was a CHL and could be armed. In fact, it wasn't until he asked me to turn around so he could cuff me and I raised my hands above my head and told him there was a gun in my front pocket that he did anything. Even then he didn't say anything, just reached in a got the gun and put it in his car. He didn't even clear the chamber. With everything finished, cuffs removed, all plastic and papers returned, he got my gun out of his car, cleared it and gave the gun, magazine, and chamber round to my wife.
It's over and we are all home but still a bit shaken. How is everyone else's weekend?
My DPS contact. It's a good one.

Didn't even know there was a Decatur "county" in Texas. I know where the City of Decatur is (Wise county) a bit Northwest of Fort Worth. Maybe that is what the officers were referring to.
Glad it worked out for you and that no one was injured in the accident.
Aside from the mistaken identity, sounds the troopers did O.K.

Spartans ask not how many, but where!

As it should be. If you were going to be a danger to anyone in this situation, it would have been towards the other driver. The trooper knew that since he hadn't arrived to find a crime scene on top of an accident, that you were no danger at all.dws1117 wrote: Well I pulled over called 911 then helped push the other car out of the roadway. Wow, glad they cleared it up quickly. I wouldn't be surprised if they were comparing the date of your CHL, the date of the warrant, etc., to see that you were obviously clear.By this time another trooper had arrived. But, it could have been worse!

I had an experience like this about 10 years ago in Phoenix.
There was a wanted child molester that had my same name, and lived on a street with the same name as mine, but in a different city.
I was immidately handcuffed and tossed in the back of a police car. I sat back there for about 5 mins when they realised the man they wanted was over 50 years old. (I was 20 at the time.)
The cops were about as professional and tolerant as i'd expect them to be, given the information they had at the time. I didn't get beaten or anything, but they made it clear that they were disgusted. Considering they had a match on 2 datapoints, I'd probably have been as sure as they were they had what they were after.

That would scare the @#$% out of me. We may not have a perfect legal system but I'll take it over any other one on the planet.dws1117 wrote:Yeah, it's not a good feeling to be handcuffed for something that you know you didn't do. I don't fault the officers. They were just going on what information was presented at the time.
