Shooting in Alabama (9 + shooter dead)

Post by Wildscar »

Only a matter of time. It can happen anywhere.

SAMSON, Ala. – A gunman killed at least nine people on a terrifying rampage across two Alabama counties Tuesday, burning down his mother's home, killing members of his own family and shooting apparent strangers on their porches as he drove by, authorities said. He then fatally shot himself at a metals plant.

Ironic how my Dad is on a road trip golfing tour right in that area...He and his friends are about to tee off this morning...

He told me people around there are livid...

I noticed on the local news this morning a picture of a guy hanging some sort of tarp over a damaged portion of some building there, and right on his hip (no law enforcement credential visible) was a nice holstered semi-auto...

Not that that would do any good (at this point), but I guess it was a statement he was trying to make or something...

Apparently someone who was killed, was trying to intervene (against the gunman), whether they were armed or not has yet to be revealed to the public...

It will be interesting to see if that is the case...I believe this is something we need to investigate ourselves and post what we find out about that as soon as possible...

The problem with events like this is that it just gives more ammo (no pun intended) to scream for more gun control when in reality an armed citizen willing to step up and intervene to try and stop the shootings could have been more effective. :smash:

True, and reading foxe's article confirms the 'demonizing guns' ideology right away with the mention of the shooter using an Automatic Weapon, spraying the town with bullets, and towards the end the appeal from the sheriff's deputy for more strict gun control as a nation....

Myers, the grieving sheriff's deputy, made an appeal Wednesday to tighten the country's laws on the ownership of automatic weapons.

"As a community, as a family, as a nation, we need to do something about this," he said.
The guy who said that was the Deputy. . . the one who lost his wife and daughter as they were across the street from their house visiting the shooter's family when the shooter came by. The deputy's infant daughter was also shot in the leg and is undergoing surgery.

I agree that more gun control won't help, but let's make sure not to dogpile this guy at this time. I've seen his television interviews - he's beside himself with grief and pain while trying to muster the strength to still raise that little baby and his son who was not involved. He's just running on raw emotion right now.

someone needs to ask a liberal why you never read about mass shootings at gun shows or shooting ranges if guns cause so much violence just to see what they say

Raw emotion is not an excuse to blame the gun. It was the guy with the trigger that should be getting ALL the blame.

I'm curious what kind of "assault rifle" the shooter was using. By definition, an "assault rifle" is a fully-automatic military weapon.

I wonder if it really was an illegal assault rifle, or if it was just a Ruger 10/22 with a 30-round magazine and a folding stock.

Start with the ones who run the gun shows. . . . Every one I've been to has been posted 30.06. :banghead:

I agree. . . if, after reflection, he becomes another Brady, then I'll be annoyed at him misplacing the blame.

On the television interviews I saw with the guy, he was stumbling to finish sentences - he looks like a zombie. He doesn't know what to say. There's a chance (let's hope) that he just uttered the statement as he's contemplating the totality of the situation and some reporter ran with it. I'll be surprised (and disappointed) if he becomes a crusader for their cause after he gets some time to grieve and begin healing.

I agree, we DO need to do something.
I'm thinkin' suppressive fire until I can get some cover, then a nice aimed shot.....

More details of this incident are becoming public.

The killer kept a list of people that had offended him, including at two companies where he had worked. However, most of his victims were his relatives, including his mother and 74-year-old grandmother.

The chief of police of the town where the killer shot at a police car stated that the killer had an automatic weapon:
"He opened up on us with an AK-47," said Geneva Police Chief Frankie Lindsey, who was wounded in the shoulder. "That's what it looked like. It could have been an M-16, but it was an assault rifle, automatic. And he burst about 15 to 18 rounds on our vehicle, all at once."
http://abcnews.go.com/US/Story?id=7055006" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

It remains to be seen whether this was a legally owned automatic rifle (very doubtful), an illegally modified weapon, or something else.
