Carry while at home

I made the mistake this morning of getting out of bed and going about the house messing with stuff. I did not even think about it when I got up to put on my rig because I was just going to be around the house and I do not usually carry around the house. For some odd reason I never had worried that much about it. Little did I know there was an intruder in my next door neighbors house running around while she was home! She came over and called the police ( of course it took them about 6 min to show up) and as soon as she came over I was just beside myself What if the person had decided to go one house down to go in. It would have been me, unarmed standing around. The police did not find anyone in the home of course so this person is still running around the area.

This is a lesson to me that even if I am just slobbing around the house I need to take the effort to always carry.

Another thought, if some had entered your home and they turned to flee would you "shoot to stop the threat" for yourself and others they may go after when they escape your house? There have been many stories were someone gets confronted and flee to other houses/places and end up doing harm to a person.I am not sure how I would feel if they escaped me and then went on to harm someone else.

My short answer on a fleeing intruder. I would not shoot.

Long answer. What happened while they were intruding? Did they create mayhem or assault? Did they simply panic and leave? If the former occurred and I considered it severe, they may get a round or twelve in their direction. If they did nothing other than breaking and entering, I would be chasing them with a camera and gun.

Today home invasion has become the crime of choice around here, therefore, I carry all day every day no matter where I am at. I would not shoot if an intruder turned to run after breaking open the door and seeing me armed and yelling to stop. I would definitely call 911 and watch him to see where he is heading. I believe when he turns and runs, the threat is over.

I guess I'm lucky not to live in an area where I would feel the need to carry around the house. I would probably move first if I could. But if I couldn't I would at least beef up the security of the residence. It's not that hard to make it difficult for an intruder to break in without giving a person time to call for help or a chance to grab a weapon. I guess I just can't imagine feeling the need to carry in my own home.

poppo, check where breakins are happening. they are not in "bad" areas. they can happen to anyone ANYWHERE!

Then there was the guy who, upon learning that most accidents happen within 5 miles of home, moved.

What better place to commit a home invasion is there than an area where the occupants think it could never happen to them?

poppo, check where breakins are happening. they are not in "bad" areas. they can happen to anyone ANYWHERE!

If an intruder turns and runs from my home..... I consider myself and the intruder lucky!

As for the scenario where the intruder may run next door to rob someone after he's looked down the barrel of my 12g or Glock, I doubt he's thinking "Well, let's just try next door".... bull he's hauling ass outta there!

My rule is, if he's running away, that's a good thing. Take your finger off the trigger, survey your surroundings, and call 911.

As for carrying at home, yes what happens to your next door neighbor can definitely happen to you. No matter what part of town you live in.
I carry, or have a firearm within reach, until I get in bed. And then it's till within reach.

You are right. Mom was on board but the wife was where yours is.

How many times have you seen the news after a break in and they are interviewing the other neighbors and you hear one of them say "I just cant believe something like this could happen here, this is such a nice neighborhood". Sometimes it helps to think like a criminal, would you want to rob a house in an area where you know people dont have alot of money; or do you hit the area that you know people will have alot of nice expensive toys in their house?

I agree, absolutely! You said it a whole lot better than I can. I don't know of any place that is safe in this day and time. We must be prepared and situational aware of our surroundings at all times. The minute you let up....that is when everything will be turned up side down. Most people on this forum carry 24/7 and that is good advise.

I carry at home because I want to keep in the habit of having my gun. I don't expect a break-in but it can happen. My fire extinguisher sits in my kitchen. I don't expect a fire, but it can happen. If a break-in happens to me, I don't want my friends saying, "LittleGun was a real good shot. He took self-defense classes and practiced all the time. Too bad that when they kicked down his door, he didn't have his gun."

My point above was that the door should not have been able to be kicked down in the first place. And do you folks carry while you are in the shower too?
