CHL Processing time and what goes on behind the scene

Post by MinhWin »

I have sent my CHL packet to the DPS and it shows that through USPS that they have received the packet on February 25, 2009. On March 19, 2009, it shows application is processing. I call the DPS every day to question about my packet. Please note that majority of workers there don't know the process. I was lucky from all of the calls, I was able to get some information from them. I am sharing it with all anxious people who reads these forums.

The packet gets mailed to the DPS. It takes roughly 3-4 weeks before a data entry person enters the information into the system. From there, your packet is assigned to another personnel who will go over all of the materials that you have sent to see if you are missing any paperwork and if there are paperwork that is needed, then you will receive a rejection letter from the DPS to correct the issue. (Remember, if you were not born in the U.S. make sure you send them in proper documentation stating that you are a U.S. citizens. All application will get rejected and more documentation will be needed if you weren't born in the U.S. So by the time you get the rejection letter and sending in the proper documentation, your application will be delayed for roughly 2-3 weeks. This is based on the timeframe of them sending you a letter and you sending it back to them and they enter it into the system. I know this because it happened to my brother).

If the DPS personnel sees that your paperwork is in order, they will assign it to an investigator who will go over your paperwork and begin the background check. From that point, they have 60 days to mail you the license or a denial letter.

I hope this helps.
