Chime In: Former LEO TxCHL Forum Members

I'm wondering how many here are former LEO's who have let their peace officer license expire like myself and hence obtained their CHL.

Perhaps you'd like to chime in on this thread and let us know?
I keep seeing references from some of you in a few threads, I've even had lively debates with some.

I imagine most current LEOs wouldn't be interested in identifying exactly what department they work for for obvious reasons (you don't want IA knowing all your opinions that the International Association of Chiefs of Police would disagree with), but all you Ex-LEOs out there might enjoy stating your credentials. If nothing else, everyone will see that we're just as polarized and diverse in our opinions as everyone else.

I joined Greenville, Tx (hometown) P.D. at age 21, after graduating from Texoma Regional Police Academy. I was a patrol officer from 1987 to 1995 and served part of that time as K9 officer. Completed apprehension and narcotics K9 training at Adlerhorst International in Riverside, California. My dog was a Belgian Malinois named Bo.

The K9 aspect of law enforcement is something I find intriguing. I just don't know if I could ever stand to part with my dog though.

I was a Reserve Officer with a local P.D. in Missouri for 4 years (about 25 years ago.) I got married and moved to another city with the real job and never hooked up with their department. After moving I had a couple of old full time co-LEO's from the old department that had moved there and they tried to get me to join, but was traveling too much with the main job to be an asset to their force.

I have nothing but respect for those that are out there today doing the job. Sometimes I miss it, but seeing the things you have to deal with these days, not sure if I would want to go back out. Probably better for me to reminisce and let it be a young man's game!

I joined Friendswood PD in 1981 as a reserve officer. At that time there was a distinction between a "peace officer" and a "law enforcement officer," so all of us were "unpaid regulars." I earned my Advanced Certificate before I left in 1995 and, for a few years, I also ran the reserve program. I left in 1995 because I was too busy to put in a reasonable number of hours. I tell the story that I decided to leave when I was rolling around on the ground with a (oops, I can't say that) subject who was trying to bite my ear off. While this did happen, it isn't really the reason I left, but it makes a better story than being too busy.

At times I think I'd like to go back as a firearms instructor, but I doubt I ever will. At 59, I'm way too old to be rolling in the dirt and biting ears!

Wow, looks like 1995 was a dark year for law enforcement with Cotton and Frazier leaving the profession at the same time. I wonder how they've ever managed without us...

Never had anyone try to bite my ear off, but I did get kicked in the head and knocked smooth out once. No brain damage thaaat eye can tale frum eet...

I had a guy put his size 12 Tony Lamas squarely in the middle of my chest and kick me out of the front seat of his car. Two backup units arrived about that time and both officers said my butt didn't hit the ground the first time until I was 5 feet out of the door. They were laughing so hard they almost couldn't use the Streamlight technique to get him out of the car also. After I caught my breath, I felt a little guilty about all the bad things I had said about having to wear a vest.

I asked the Sgt. to let me take him to the station and he said "why, so he can kick you out of your own car this time?" That's funny Sage, real funny. Looking back on it, it really was.

I have a feeling this thread is going to be fun. Keep the stories coming guys, but remember the statute of limitations!
