Illegal 51% sign at El Taco Tote at Westhiemer

Post by Doug.38PR »

I ate dinner with my Sunday School class today at El Taco Tote between Voss and Fountainview on Westhiemer. It had a 51% alchohol sign on both doors. This place did have a small bar (which was completely unmanned and unused at this time) but it's primary function appeared to be to serve Mexican food. You get in line, order your food and go wait for them to buzz you.
I have forgotten the website to report this, does anybody know.

Also, just on the side, last night some of us dropped by the Bowling Alley over off of Bunker Hill ln in Houston near Memorial city. They have redone that whole place. It is a lot more polished. It serves food, has waiters, music and bowling. It also serves alchohol....it too has a 51% Sign. I though they made most of their money off of bowling admission and food.

I take it you want the 30.06 website?:

The El Taco Tote probably has the wrong sign. The web site to report it is the TABC complaint area. TABC has full instuctions on how to complain about a licensed premise ont heir web site now.

The problem with the bowling alley is one I have mentioned before. Many times, the alley contracts out the bar and food services. If the bar is a different business, it may make more than 51% from alcohol. When they apply, they list the whole alley as the licensed premise, thus placing it all off limits. The problem is that the bar wants people to be able to take the drinks back to the bowling area and this would be illegal if they restricted the license to just the bar area. I am not sure how we can word the law to still allow no carrying in bars (which I do not see us getting away from soon), but to fix this problem. If I come up with an idea on this, I will let Charles and TSRA know so we can try to work on it during the next session.

TABC does pretty well following up with those - at least they do in the Austin area. And they will let you know about fixing the signs.

So we've established that their 51% sign is incorrect. Now, for those of us in the Houston area... how was the food!?

Food was edible. Wasn't my favorite. On the other hand all I got was as sirloin soft taco with some lettuce and hot sauce. Some of the other people at the table with me seemed to know a bit more about what they were doing and wanted than I did. Yesterday was my first time eating there.

As for the bowling alley, we didn't get to bowl. It was an hour wait (if that tells you how popular it is) and we started to wait for it...but when the time came around for our lane we just skipped it and sat around at Starbucks sipping on tea and coffee. Very polished place that new Bunker Hills lanes btw.

I just sent the two complaints. Hopefully they won't be replaced with 30.06 signs

From what srothstein said, I believe my complaint to be valid. Drinks (hard and soft) as well as food were being served by waitresses to customers at their bowling stations all across the bowling alley.
