My first revolver...

....followed me home today. I had money from selling one of my shotguns and this little dandy was in the used section at Cabella's. $430 out the door. I would have been happier paying $400 all said and done but the test cartridge was fired in July '08 so I think it didn't see much range time. Also came with a Blackhawk holster. Thing looks brand new from the outside finish. Any advice on good pocket holsters? Quick strips or speedloaders for CC? Was going to carry in cargo shorts.

Can't help you on the pocket holster. I tried to pocket carry my 642 but for me to uncomfortable and my pants are loose. It was OK when I stood or walked but when I sat forget it. Maybe would be different with cargo type outfit. As far as quick strips try Tuff Products. There have been some good reviews here on their product.

Mika's pocket holster is the only way to fly IMO. You will have to wait a few weeks for it.....but it is cheap. They really are great little pocket holsters.

430 is not a bad price at all. Especially since it is a No -Lock Model!

I have one just like it and love it! I got mine NEW for 430 + 12.00 shipping. Then I got 30.00 back from S&W on their promotion at the time so mine was 412.00 (+10.00 FFL Fees).

Another good pocket holster is the Nemesis by DeSantis it's the only pocket holster I use. It's a stocking item also.

VERY nice!! Price doesn't seem bad in my opinion...although two gun shows ago I saw NEW pricing ranging from a high of over $500 to as low as $420!! Can you believe?? This was at the Ft. Worth show...although the ones I saw ALL had the locks - and you've got the NO LOCK model...which is what I plan on getting for my wife (as soon as I can FIND one!). Congrats!

Nice gun, nice price too. I carry mine in a Galco Ankle Glove mostly, but ditto on the Unkle Mikes Pocket Holster. I usually toss a speed loader in the other pocket, nobody's ever noticed or if they have they didn't say anything.

agree completely. HKS speed loader is the best. Speed strips are ok w/ practice.

Haha wow I guess I fared better than I thought! I really had only called McBrides in Austin and Cabella's on pricing of the 642 before I found this. Cabellas wanted something closer to $500 for a new one and McBrides was about $440, both before tax. But sounds like I could have done much worse by some of these posts! I really didn't know the one without the lock was such a hard to find item. Talk about dumb luck! I was also lucky enough to find some ammo for it...they only had 3 boxes of PMC 132 grain FMJ but I figured it good enough to just see how it shoots. So I bought a box of 50 and then a box of 20 Winchester PDX-1 (they had TONS of this and none of what I would prefer *cough* Speer *cough*) Hopefully will have a range report soon enough.

My 642 in the pocket is my everyday, all the time gun.

Get the Desantis Nemesis for now while you wait on the Mika pocket holster. I use both now, but REALLY like the Mika.

At what range are these short barrel revolvers accurate? I shot a friend S&W snubbie revolver a weekend or two ago and was not able hit a coke can at a short distance. I also shot my CZ 75 and hit ten for ten on the same can.

I am FAR from a good revolver shot and I was able to run a plate rack at 11 yards with my 642. The guns will definitely do their part if you do yours.

I agree with Jason. A good revolver is VERY accurate. I used to shoot PPC (Police Pistol Competition) with a tricked-out S&W Model 66. That was also the issued duty weapon (standard version) for our department at the time.

Were you shooting the snubbie double action? If so, that was probably the difference. If you usually shoot your CZ single action, then you probably just hadn't adjusted to the longer trigger pull and weight of the double action. Many people will pull off target during the squeeze or anticipate the shot. Practice and getting acclimated to the revolver will improve your double action shooting very quickly. If you want to see a some good shots with double action revolvers, just look up Jerry Miculek or our own High Velocity and SRVA here on the forum.
