Hello all! I've been browsing the forum a while and finally got around to actually joining. What a great site!! Now down to business...
I want to get my CHL but there are a few snags in the process that I'm concerned about. First, I was arrested for public intoxication about a year ago. I was at a company function with an open bar, got smashed, and decided to sleep in my car in a parking lot, rather than drive home. I woke up to an officer getting me out of the car and taking me in. I spent the night in jail, plead no contest, and was released and that was the end of it. I know this is a class C misdemeanor, but will it slow down my application? Will they need clarification or additional paperwork?
Second, I currently live with a relative in Houston (LOVE not paying rent!) but she's moving at the end of the summer so my current address has a very limited period of validity. After that, I will most likely move into a local apartment. So with my living situation up in the air, I don't know if I should go ahead and apply with the current address and just deal with later address changes as they happen, or wait until I'm at a more stable place. Is it even an option to use a permanent address, such as my parents' house where they've lived for about 35 years? My DL has my parents' address because I was in college until January of 2007, at which point I took a job in Houston and have since been bouncing around apartments.
I appreciate any input yall can provide, and I look forward to visiting on the site. I am a huge proponent of responsible citizens being armed whenever possible and websites like this are a great forum for the exchange of information.

Welcome to TexasCHLforum, thanks for joining us.
Your Class C PI will not be a problem, but you will need to send in documentation. We commonly refer to this as "disposition papers" but in most counties it's nothing more than a criminal history check that shows a Class C PI conviction. Who provides it will be determined by the County where the offense occurred. For example, in Harris County, you just go to the criminal courts building and get a "background check" run on yourself and you get the report. However, it's quite possible you were "handled" through a municipal court, and you will have to get your information from the municipal court clerk.
As for an address, I would apply now and use your current address. When you move, send a letter to DPS giving them your new address, along with your CHL Application number.

Thanks for the quick feedback. Do I need to have my disposition papers ready at the time of taking the course, or is it something that is just included in my packet I mail in?

Not if he moves before he gets his CHL. Unfortunately, that's quite likely.CainA wrote:And a check for $25 too, I think.Charles L. Cotton wrote: When you move, send a letter to DPS giving them your new address, along with your CHL Application number.
