on saturday night at about 3am some friends and i were hanging out a a local parking lot next to a whataburger just talking and standing around when we saw a woman walking down the street. this isnt usual in the part of town we were in but it wasnt the first time we had seen this. i kept an eye on her while my friends continued the conversation.
about the time she was directly in front of us a white ford expedition pulled into the entrance and the driver exited the vehicle. he proceeded to grab the girl and pull her back to the vehicle while she told him to leave her alone and to go away. thats when he started yelling at her to get in the vehicle and threw her in the passenger seat. about this time my friends noticed everything and were going to go intervene but i told them not to for the simple fact that we had no idea what had happened before this. they argued for a little bit more and he lost control and started hitting the side of the car and he may have hit her but it was foggy and we couldnt tell. he then threw her out onto the concrete so hard that it knocked the air out of her and drove off almost hitting a few people in the process.
would it have been okay to draw during his assault on her?
heres what i did:
as soon as he had thrown her into the car i was on the phone with 911 giving a description of both people and the vehicle. i didnt draw but was ready to if he went further.
in the end she got a ride home from someone and wasnt seen again.
would this have been justified?

You did good!

+1
You did exactly the right thing. You DON'T know the circumstances. My own moral belief is that there are NO CIRCUMSTANCES that justify hitting a woman, but legally, maybe that doesn't fly so well.
Plus - more importantly - for your own personal safety, it is not recommended to get involved in such things when you don't know any of the people involved. If the girl had been a friend of yours or something, that's totally different. But two strangers basically fighting on the street? Leave it be and/or call 911.
Your CHL gives you NO RIGHTS nor RESPONSIBILITY to act like a law enforcement officer. Let the police handle such things. They don't get paid enough for it, but that IS what they get paid to do.
I've heard of scams that start with a man hitting a woman, and then when a third party comes to "break it up" both the man and the woman jump the third person and beat/rob him.

It is hard to stand by and watch that kind of garbage, real or staged, but you probably did the best thing under the circumstances.

I'll refer you to the following thread...(http://www.texasshooting.com/TexasCHL_F ... php?t=1262" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;). The consensus was "don't draw it if you can't shoot it." Be a good witness, call 911 and move on. Your actions were correct given the information you had available at the time.
I realize this discussion is specific to defense of a third person but, the same justifications apply. And while we're at it, ask any cop who has responded to a domestic disturbance....The last thing you need/want to do is get between those people. If it escalates to a use of force/deadly force against the person you perceived as the aggressor, the person you thought you were defending may attack you.

When you take the time out of your day to beat someone, it has a much longer lasting effect on their demeanor than simply shooting or tazing them.
