Man Killed While Playing Russian Roulette
Victim Identified As Albert Delgado

POSTED: Friday, April 24, 2009
UPDATED: 1:27 pm CDT April 24, 2009

SAN ANTONIO -- An 18-year-old man died early Friday when he shot himself during a game of Russian roulette, police said.

Police said Albert Delgado and some friends were playing with a gun on the front porch of a home in the 2000 block of North Trinity Street at 3 a.m. when the victim shot himself in the head. He died at the scene.

Delgado's friends told police that he didn't think the gun was loaded but his mother doesn't believe the story.

"There's something suspicious about it," said Rebecca Garza, Delgado's mother. "My son did not shoot himself."

Garza said her son would have been alive had they not woken him up.

"Why did they come with the gun?" Garza said. "Nothing would have happened if they wouldn't have brought a gun."

After the shooting, the other teenagers took off running, and all but one were found hiding in a home next door, police said.

No charges have been filed and police are questioning Delgado's friends but it appears that their stories are matching up.

A teenager is dead after police say he tempted fate with a game of Russian Roulette. It happened off I-10 and Trinity, just before three this morning. Police say the teen and several friends were playing the game on his front porch with a semi automatic handgun. Authorities say no charges are expected to be filed.

How do you play RR with a semi-auto, randomly put dummy rounds in the magazine if it doesn't go bang, rack the slide, repeat as necessary?

Maybe they were using a FIE semi-auto. You could fill 'er up with live rounds and still not be sure it would go off...
Definitely a Darwin Award contender.

OK, playing Russian Roulette with a semi automatic handgun that was his first mistake, no little wheel to spin...Definitely a Darwin Award contender for the year. :confused5

Does the Medical Examiner rule this a suicide or an accident? Stupid is not a manner of death (it would help end many debates if it were)

It all depends on the Doctor.......I have seen a dozen lively debates about this very thing in my office. Some feel that it is truely a stupid accident and the actor just happened to fall to unfortunate fate. Some feel that the activitiy is so inherently risky that death should be expected. These discussions involved a revolver.....not a semi-auto.

Food for thought.

Although I tried to research this further on news sites to confirm the details,
this is what I heard on the radio news about this incident:

It happened about 3 AM.

The handgun was a semi-automatic .45, brand/model not stated.

Someone had dropped the magazine out of it.

Our brain surgeon was talking about Russian Roulette, assumed the gun
was now empty because of the dropped mag, took the gun out of someone
else's hands, put it to his head, and pulled the trigger.

Guess it's too late to tell him about the 4 rules.
