What brands of ammo would you think twice on stockpiling?

Since ammo is getting harder and harder to find nowadays what would yall recommend I stockpile or not stockpile?

I have a .45, 380, 223 that I would like to keep ammo for.

Does it really matter on brands? I had to buy monarch .45 the other day because thats all that was available. (if everything else sells and their are 5 boxes of monarch on the shelf I have to ask what gives?)

I buy a box or two of different types of ammo when I am buying a bunch of WWB at Acadamy. I like to at least know what my gun will eat if they do not have the WWB that I normally shoot. I have used Blazer brass and aluminum, Monarch brass, WWB, Remington UMC and Surefire, American Eagle, Fiocci, and some Magtech. They all functioned fine for me, but I prefer the WWB so that is what I buy in bulk when I can. I just don't buy more than a box or so if I have no tried it in my gun personally.

Last Saturday out at the range, a guy who was shooting Wolf ammo in his AR got a case stuck in the chamber. 40 minutes later when I left, he was still trying to get it out. Wolf ammo is relatively cheap and relatively available, but at what price if you actually need your gun? I know that a lot of people are comfortable with it, but not me. I'm not havin' it. What I saw last Saturday confirmed my suspicions.

I think steel case ammo is much less of an issue in an AK or SKS. Don't think I'd shoot it in my AR.

No FTEs in my SKS with the hundreds or rounds of Wolf I've shot in it.

I've never had trouble out of Wolf type ammo in my SKS and AK rifles. I do have 500 rounds of Wolf .223 in steel cases, and those rounds do give me trouble with some of my AR-15s. They always go bang, but the feeding has been the problem for me. I'd really recommend those only for bolt-action type rifles where feeding issues aren't so much a problem.

I have never had a problem with Golden Tiger ammo, and that's my "go to" stuff for SKS/AK shoots.

.22LR - stockpile Federal 550 round bricks from Wal-Mart.

9mm and 45acp in WWB all the way (for stockpiling, but not necessarily for daily defensive carry)

I just want to get enough ammo on hand that if something bad happened I could defend myself. I wish I had bought a long time ago but I really didn't picture obama getting elected.

My list goes:

.45 - I want at least 300 rounds
.223 - At least 500
30-30 - 250-500 at least
.380 - any amount I can get
I've already got a pretty nice stockpile of shotgun rounds.

I figure if I can't get food I can kill a lot of deer and other game with my 30-30, and if I ever did have to use my pistol for personal protection 300 rounds is more than enough as I'd be lucky to maybe get 1 clip off before getting shot anyway.


Also regular .45 WWB should be sufficient to stop a threat anyway right? I really only carry hollowpoints so I can be sure the bullet won't hit whatever is behind what I'm aiming at.

FWIW, I have had no problems with any Monarch brand .223 brass, 9mm brass or 9mm steel case.

I know not the longevity difference, if any, but would avoid "Ultramax". The smoke generated from that stuff in the handgun rounds I've seen has been awful.

I haven't had any trouble with the wolf ammo either. Although I have heard some of the horror stories of stuck rounds in AR type rifles. My Kimber loves wolf ammo. Well...maybe tolerates is a better word. The issue I have with wolf is it is real nasty. nasty as in get's residue all over the darned place...my hands even get dirtier when firing wolf in my handguns. I have a Thompson that won't cycle properly with wolf due to the light loads. As far as stock piling....if you don't already have ammo stock piled, it is too late...IMHO...ammo is going to start creeping down over the next few months and a whole lot of guys are going to regret running up credit cards with over priced ammo they can't get rid of. I had already stocked up last year, before Premier Obama. To answer your question about calibers, I would stock up on any caliber I had a weapon for.

In reference to the steel cased ammo in AR's...they always say keep it clean, keep it clean, and then get serious about keeping it clean. So the guys you know of that have had problems...how well are their weapons maintained? Do they clean them regularly after use, do they have good magazines? I have had a few issues, but nothing that overrides the cost saving for target practice for me anyway. I am not saying it runs perfect every time and it is dirty. But if it works or you want to try a box or two don't let all the hype steer you away. Every gun is different and has a different appetite.
