This is unbelievable. I sure hope these two whack jobs don't have a CHL. This is the stereo type most liberals think of when they envision gun owners. Very sad for the families of the victims.

Boy, 7, Dies In Off-Road Shooting

HOUSTON -- A 7-year-old boy died Saturday and a 30-year-old family friend was in serious condition after authorities said they were shot by a married couple who thought the off-roaders were trespassing on their property.
Donald Coffey Jr. died Saturday morning at a Houston hospital, less than two days after the boy was struck in the head with a shotgun blast, Liberty County Sheriff's Cpl. Hugh Bishop said.
The boy, his father, his 5-year-old sister and a family friend were off-roading about 40 miles northeast of Houston late Thursday when they were shot after stopping their vehicles so the children could go to the bathroom. Donald Coffey Sr. had a pellet wound in his right shoulder. Coffey's daughter, Destiny, was hit in the elbow but was in good condition.
Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center spokeswoman Alex Rodriguez said Patrick Cammack, 30, was upgraded from critical condition to serious condition after being shot in the head.
The married couple remained in the Liberty County Jail on Saturday on second-degree felony charges of aggravated assault. Bonds for Sheila Muhs, 45, and her husband, Gayle Muhs, also 45, were set at $25,000 apiece Saturday. They do not have an attorney, Bishop said.
The Muhs were interviewed by county investigators, Bishop said, but he did not have details on what they said.
The Houston Chronicle reported that suspects live in a small house on stilts with a rebel flag flying from the roof. A sign posted out front reads: "Trespassers will be shot. Survivers will be reshot!! Smile I will."
Bishop said the district attorney could upgrade the charges to murder on Monday.
"That is something they will look into with the DA," Bishop said. "We're still trying to get the circumstances behind the incident."
Cammack and the Coffeys were off-roading in the rural area on a levee that encircles a fishing lake. The area includes a dirt road, trees and a lot of overgrown brush, Bishop said, adding that it's not uncommon for people to go off-roading there.
Authorities allege the couple blasted the four people with shotguns after they mistakenly thought they were trespassing on their property. Liberty County Chief Deputy Ken DeFoor said the gunshots rang out about 9 p.m., when Sheila Muhs fired once with a 12-gauge shotgun. She then handed it to her husband, who also fired once.
DeFoor said Sheila Muhs called 911 and told the dispatcher, "They're out here tearing up the levee, so I shot them."
Bishop said there was no indication the shooting victims did anything threatening toward the Muhs.
"We have an 11-year-old witness who was in one of the vehicles who said they stopped to go to the bathroom," Bishop said.
Coffey and Cammack took a county road to the residential levee. Shortly afterward, DeFoor said, the shots were fired from about 40 yards away. DeFoor said the victims were unarmed.
DeFoor said the levee belongs to the subdivision and is not private property. He called the shooting "ludicrous."

I have to wonder why anyone would go "off-roading" in that part of the state after dark? Why would anyone take their kids "off-roading" in that part of the state after dark?
Something is missing here.

It is the same reason folks take their kids out on non-street legal 4 wheelers and drive down flooded streets (and yards) in subdivisions washing water into people homes, that would otherwise not get any water in them...It's call no common sense...
Just to do it, and watch other peoples misery...
But shooting people who do that stuff is not something I would encourage or condone...There are better ways to handle it...

Agreed. It has been said that sometimes we are our own worst enemies.... Oh well, you pretty much said it all. Too bad about the little boy having to pay for the "off-roading" parent's lack of.....er, uh...judgement.

I don't do off roading so I might be missing something. My understanding from the article is that there was some kind of road between the river and levy. Every one know the best fishing is at dawn and dusk, so returning after dark doesn't seem that unreasonable. Those things have headlights don't they?Oldgringo wrote:The other thread has been locked?

Did you ever see the movies, Southern Comfort or Easy Rider. Headlights don't help much when you're alone and where you ain't supposed to be. The "Big Thicket" country is somewhere I don't need to be on our ATV in the daylight, let alone at night...even if it had twin 50's mounted on it.Liberty wrote:I don't do off roading so I might be missing something. BTW, the Muhs could be anyone's friends, neighbors and/or relatives. Ethnic and/or racial slurs were uncalled for.

This thread seems to be going in a more intellectual direction. I really don't see why we would want to lock a perfectly clean thread because some other thread turned racist. My request would be that we allow it to stay open unless stupidity takes over again.CompVest wrote:The other thread was locked due to the topic shifting to ethnic slurring. I don't know what folks are thinking sometimes. Shooting at people for what they perceive as trespassing. Honestly, it makes me question laws allowing shooting to protect property. I know there are probably the rare occasions when it might be justified...for instance stopping a guy who has just stolen your wallet with your weeks pay in it. But blasting away at someone for simple trespassing is just not going to cut it. At least not when they are not posing a direct threat to you or yours.

I must confess to not knowing much about that part of the world. Is that a pretty rough area? When I saw it was in Houston, I just assumed it was the typical suburban neighborhood.Oldgringo wrote:The other thread has been locked?

Re: This one just trips my trigger!!!
Wasn't in Liberty County Just North and East of Harris County. I have done some work there, and never noticed that the people there are any different than where I live and play Galveston/ Houston Chambers except maybe a little friendlier than a lot of the Houston folks. I always thought Big Thicket was further to the East. Sometimes borders in Texas are a funny thing.03Lightningrocks wrote:I must confess to not knowing much about that part of the world. I have met a few of the people in the Liberty County done some work there a few times, and they don't seem to have horns, everyone I met could read and write. They even treated me who happens to speak with pretty serious Boston accent cordially. I believe we have a few people here that live in Liberty County.
I've wondered if the Muhs will be protected in any way by the Castle Doctrine. I don't think so, It sounds like the victims had every right to be where they had a right to be. If they did somehow cross a property line they didn't use force. They weren't stealing or committing any mischief. There are some issues here that we can learn from and should be discussed Such as if the Castle doctrine could be abused in this case. Or the dangers of wondering off onto private property. The thing is I believe the Muhs might have actually believed that they were legally justified in shooting at the family. This topic really deserves discussion I hope it doesn't get locked.

I don't know if it has any bearing from a legal standpoint, but as I understand it the shooters had been involved in prior altercations regarding what they "perceived" as trespassing, but was not.

But did anything actually happen to them? If the charges just got dropped, the Muhs could have convinced themselves that they were justified.Purplehood wrote:I don't know if it has any bearing from a legal standpoint, but as I understand it the shooters had been involved in prior altercations regarding what they "perceived" as trespassing, but was not.
