The compact is too small for my hands but it might work. Make sure she holds a few guns before she decides, give her a few options on size and manufacturer.

I love all of my M&Ps. I like the way the 9c fits my hand making it very comfortable to shoot. It is very accurate. I carry mine one of two ways: in my purse or strong side owb in a Tucker holster I had made for me.
The great thing about M&Ps is if she doesn't like the size of the 9c she should try the standard 9. I have carried both in the above methods with no issues. I have competed in IDPA with both with no issues and great results.
I have shot for fun and competitively many guns and the M&P are by far my favorite.

Re: Considering a S&W M&P 9mm Compact - Questions
Another lady student out today doing shooting portion of 101 class. Out of choices from 5 different 9mm semis, the M&P Compact came in "second place" in her opinion. She did shoot the M&P some, but opted to take CHL test with Kahr K-9.
M&P also was "second place" last week with another lady who liked the XD-9 Subcompact a little better.

Re: Considering a S&W M&P 9mm Compact - Questions
I have one, er well, my better half has one. We searched for months to find a firearm that she liked, and the M&P 9c won out for her. We both like it, I sometimes carry it in a safariland paddle holster and forget it's there. It shoots great, only feeding issues we've had were the first 100 rounds, which were some gunshow reloads....the kind that you buy in a plastic back....I'm thinking they were loaded a bit light. On the other hand, there are, or were last time I checked, VERY few aftermarket parts for customizing them if you're into that stuff. It's a nice little gun, smooth shooting, ACCURATE, and fun to shoot. I also took a friend and his wife out a few weeks ago, because he wants her to learn, but all he has are .40 and .45 calibers and she's scared by the recoil. She fired one mag from the S&W, asked me how to reload it, and ended up burning through 200+ rounds before I knew it. She is now looking to buy one for herself.
