We are "deranged" according to this Letter to Editor

Post by Commander »

Today's Dallas Morning News contains the following letter to the editor:

"Logic of these bills eludes me

On the same day that federal officials moved to protect consumers from credit card companies and the future of our children with higher gas mileage standards, the Texas Senate voted to allow handguns on campus and a statewide smoking ban was declared DOA.

To protect individual derangement and deadly habits, Texas' elected officials seem eager to sacrifice the common good. In so many ways, our state has already seceded from the Union.

Larry Upshaw, Dallas"

I'd write a response, but this logic is so warped, I don't know where to begin.

Just thank Mr. Upshaw for exhibiting a textbook example of "indivdual derangement" and leave it at that :thumbs2:

So smaller cars that are more dangerous at highway speeds protect the children? Oh, now I get it!:

Well the more people that die in highway accidents, the fewer people who will need Medicaid or Social Security, thus protecting the financial future of our children. :???:

Since he refers to the exercising of Second Amendment rights as "deranged", then the exercise of any Right must be "Deranged" .

My answer to the DMN:

Re "Logic of these bills eludes me" DMN Letters 05/22/09:

Smoking habits notwithstanding, Mr. Upshaw needs to be reminded that it is law abiding citizens who are proposed to be allowed to carry concealed handguns on campus, the deranged already do so without regard for the law.

The right being protected is that of individual self-defense, via the Second Amendment.

Hmmm. According to David Smith, from Bulverde, in a letter to the San Antonio Express-News, published 22 May 2009, "Many Texans believe, as I do, that a person in the 21st century who thinks it necessary to carry a loaded weapon everywhere is himself pretty 'deranged.'" His comment was in response to Sen. Jeff Wentworth's belief that someone with a concealed weapon on campus might actually prevent violence caused by "some deranged madman who comes on campus with a weapon."

Is there a network telling folks like Mr. Upshaw and Mr. Smith when and what to write and telling them that "deranged" is the word of the day? Oh, never mind, I'm probably having a deranged moment.

De-ranged.

Thats when you have to re-zero your scope, right?

De-ranged is what happens when your local gun range closes.

Good catch. The word "deranged" was probably part of some Brady Bunch talking points memo to their faithful.
