My vest screams GUN

Post by longtooth »

Everyone knows I cover w/ a vest almost exclusively except the extreeme heat of the summer. Still do then when I can get away w/ a t-shirt like in the pic.
Image

A week ago I was fitted w/ hearing aids. (Posted that praise here)
While there, I was in a vest & armed OWB, Kimber Pro. I talked to them about mowing & the noise & dirt there.
Also about my shooting.
2 Technitions & one of them for sure was NOT a gun person, no knowledge of what we talked about except noise.
When asked about how much or how often I shot, I thought about this idea of vests, fanny pacs, Hiwaiian shirts,....screaming gun.
Huuuummmmm. Think I will see if I can get asked if I have one on. (First time I have ever done this.)
I just told them what I did. Range officer, train folks in hand gun safety, marksmanship, personal defense. Stopped short of carry gear & how to conceal. :evil2:

Never an eye raised, questioning look, nothing.
Folks vests, FannyPacs, & H-shirts only scream gun to those that know I carry.

four rules.
1 - Quality gear
2 - Put it on
3 - Cover it up
4 - LEAVE IT ALONE
No one will ever know. :thumbs2:

You know, I have an interesting outlook on the whole "X screams GUN" thing.

I just don't care.

My only real reason for concealing at all is to meet legal requirements. If someone else has a problem with the fact that I carry, then they either will need to deal with it, or not associate with me.

Of course, if I'm going to break a company rule or carry illegally, I might feel differently, but that's never a good idea. (Not saying you would ever do that, of course!)

Then again, I'm one of those nutballs that, in a perfect world, would open carry most of the time.

I agree with both y'all. I generally wear an untucked Shamu sized Tee under a denim overshirt or just the untucked Tee and carry OWB. If anyone notices, they don't seem concerned OR plain just don't care.

For church and other more dressy ocassions, it's a .38 snubbie or my Sig P 230 in a pocket holster with the same reaction.

LT, where can I get a vest like the blue one you have on in the picture?

I normally just wear an oversized T of some sort. But I have to wear a "wife beater" undershirt under it so that my mags and pistol don't touch my skin (them things are cold).

Might be nice to wear a vest and a single T occasionally.

Nitrogen, I agree with all you said exactly! :tiphat:

All my dennim vests start out as the Dennim "welders shirts." Remove the sleeves at the shoulder seam, square it up using the high point of the contour on the sides, and put a him in it. Starched & ironed no one knows it is a modified shirt & I am asked pretty regular where I get them. Academy.
Does not take a talor to do it. Just someone w/ a sewing machine & a little experience. I can actually do it myself. Mom does it in about a forth of the time though.

:iagree: When I went to CHL Instructor renewal school in 2007, I walked into the fried chicken place next to the hotel. I was wearing a 5.11 vest I had bought at NRA HQ and it had the NRA logo. One of the other instructors who is also a LEO started laughing rather loudly. Then he said, "You guys amaze me; you wear a 5.11 vest and think we (presumably COPS) don't know you have a gun." My response, "You mistakenly think I care what you know or don't know." We wound up sitting next to each other in class and probably would have become friends, if we didn't live in different parts of Texas.

LT, I'm going to have to steal your Mom's vest idea; I really like it.

IMO, those type of clothes only scream gun to other CHL holders. Anyone else isn't even thinking about. They just think you are a weird guy wearing a vest.

I use a crossbreed holster and I can normally conceal fine with a good T-shirt. I just have to make sure it doesn't catch when I sit and stand up.

:iagree: I use to worry about printing and the whole nine yards and then....I found the TEXAS CHL Forum!! My mind was put to ease and now I have found it out to be absolutely true for myself.

LT, I have always admired your vest. I think they look great, and I agree with your advice for the new CHL'ers.....

I just want some info. on the pocket holster you said you had for your Sig P-230. I have on in stainless, and have been trying to decide on a carry holster.

Thanks,
If the 2nd admendment only applies to muskets and muzzle-loaders, then the 1st admentment must apply only to the spoken or printed word. Printing must be done on hand presses, news stories must be written in longhand, no keyboards or electric processes may be used.
