Carrying to the gym.

Post by southtexaspilot »

Anyone have any experience or ideas on gym locker rooms? I go to the gym in the mornings and take my shower and get ready for work there at the gym. There are no 30.06 postings at the gym I go to but I figure bystanders might be a little alarmed. I really feel my firearm is safer locked up in the locker than sitting in my car waiting to be stolen at 5:30am. What have you guys done to remedy the situation? Thanks for any constructive advice,

I agree about the gym locker versus the car at 0530. Or anytime, for that matter.

I carry my primary handgun and its CTAC holster in a separate pocket of a small handbag (the "Diplomat Junior Bailout Bag" to be specific), along with the spare mag. All my small important goodies (e.g. wallet, knife, keys, GPS) go in the handbag. A Kel-Tec is always in my gym shorts pocket. When I dress, if no one is around, I put on the holster and handgun. If someone is there, I just carry the bag out and holster in my car (actually, a truck with good window tint).

Of course you can get a lock box for the car and all that -- actually I have one -- but I like all my important stuff to be as close to me as possible. I have been in situations where it was not easy to get back to the car in a hurry.

For what it's worth, I just use the local community center gym to exercise, and until now, I've left my weapon in the car. The reason is that I haven't had a practical means of carrying the gun when I'm just wearing gym shorts and a t-shirt. That said, my wife brings her purse (gun concealed inside) into her jazzercise classes and sets it on the floor next to her exercise mat. When we're using the walking track, then she uses one of the pay-per-use lockers in the front lobby, facing the check-in desk. I have a Maxpedition Fatboy S-Type Versipack on order, and when it arrives, I'll use it in circumstances like this, and keep it in a locker if necessary. For certain the locker is safer than my car, as the lockers I'm talking about all face the reception desk in the lobby, and you can't get into it without the one key that you pay a quarter to use.

Sure you can!... just not without making a LOT of noise, and getting noticed by everyone in the building

I like to keep it nearby at the gym if I can. If I'm in a workout situation where I can't keep it close and keep an eye on it (gym bag), then I put it in a locker with a combination lock.

The vehicle is the worst place, unless you have a safe that is bolted to the frame. Gym parking lots are popular places for car break-ins, as few people entering a gym are going to be less than 45 min.

The NRA & TSRA are a bargain; they're much cheaper than the cold, dead hands experience.

It's easier than that. I worked for 3 years in a Rec Center (TAMU's Rec Center the first 3 years it was open) and those quarter return lockers are nice...but there is a master key. How often do you think the supervisor is asked to open someone's locker because "that key must have fallen out of my pocket"!?!?!? Many times a day during my shifts. We rarely had more than 50% of the lockers usable due to lost keys after the first month of classes.

Stuff gets stolen at gyms with alarming regularity. Stay anonymous and you're probably fine, but...if someone with sticky fingers finds out there is a gun in there and wants it, he only has to ask and he'll probably get it.

Social Engineering. VERY simple to do for someone experienced in the art.

I usually carry in an IWB holster with belt clips, but stick with a basic Uncle Mikes ambidextrous clip holster when I'm wearing elastic gym shorts. I've had no trouble at all disarming in the locker room - I just turn my gun side toward the locker, remove my holster (takes 1 second tops), and put it all in my gym bag before locking up. No fuss at all. :)

My gym membership agreement contains a "No weapons of any kind" clause, but it's not phrased as required and the doors aren't posted, so I have no problem at all ignoring it. ;)
Carrying since 02/06/2009.

I put my 9mm Heater in a holster, in this, in the car/truck.
then I put this in a locker, locked.
FWIW, IIRC, AFAIK, FTMP, IANAL. YMMV.
