Proper Presentation of CHL to LEO

Post by USA1 »

here's the question .
when being stopped by police , what would be the best way to to present your CHL ?

should i let the officer know i am a CHL holder , and have firearm(s) in the vehicle before making any movements ?

or , just give them my DL and CHL and wait for them to ask if i have any firearms in the vehicle ?

I've had 3 traffic stops in the 9 years I've been a CHL holder...

I've never announced I was a CHL holder, I simply hand both licenses (DL & CHL) to the officer when he asks for identification.

Only once has the officer asked if I was carrying at the time.

I try to have my DL and CHL in hand before they approach the car, then hand them to them when asked for ID.

If they get to the vehicle before I can retrieve the ID's, and I am carrying, I advise I am a CHL holder, am carrying and will need to reach to retrieve my licenses.

If I am not carrying, when asked for ID, I will still get both out and hand them to the officer(s) and let them know up front I am not carrying, but wanted them to know before they ran the license and it came back showing the CHL.

I suppose that if for some bizarre reason I did not have a weapon with me, I would not show the CHL.

:iagree: The one time I've been stopped since I've had my CHL I handed him both without comment and he handed the CHL back right away without even asking if I was packing.

"rlol" :smilelol5: I looked at that too and said "huh?"

As one waiting on the license, this and a myriad of other scenarios go through my head daily. I will keep my hands on the steering wheel, and wait for the LEO to ask what he/she needs from me, before I commit to anything. If asked for ID, both will come out of my wallet for his review.

I thought about it, but then I am not a 17 year old driving a 72 Nova with a 400 small block in it anymore.

I try to have DL CHL and PoI in hand before the LEO arrives at my door.

That's what my wife did the other day (small town just south of Ft Worth). She was still ticketed for 55 in a 40.

my thing about that is , when i'm pulling over and stop , i don't want to do any digging around .
the cops have enough to worry about without wondering what i might be trying to hide .

I did but I didn't want to post because I getting tired of rereading my own post and getting mad because I don’t agree with my opinion. :bigear:

I'm always amazed at the "digging around" people have to do to find important documents like DL and Insurance.

if it's really that convoluted a process that it takes more the 3-4 seconds to locate and retrieve, maybe one's priorities should be adjusted.

I can whip out my wallet before the stop is even "under way."

not that I get that much practice, but still...
FWIW, IIRC, AFAIK, FTMP, IANAL. YMMV.
