1888 - Lord Walsingham killed 1,070 grouse in a single day at Blubberhouse [sic] in England.
He had two servants loading multiple shotguns for him, and forty "drivers" flushing birds. This kind of shooting was a craze among wealthy British men of that era.
1963 - The "Hot Line" between Washington, D.C., and Moscow went into operation.
It was a set of Teletype machines in the Pentagon and the Kremlin. American messages were sent in English. Soviet messages were sent in Russian. Maintaining the communication lines cost about $80,000 a year, which was a lot of money at that time.
The system was first used in 1967, during the Egypt-Israeli war of that year.
1967 The Senate confirmed the appointment of Thurgood Marshall to the Supreme Court.
