I have a friend with one of these.

As you said, the recoil is light; extremely light.

After a day at the range, I thought I'd found my next gun. You can hit a small target consistently at 100+ yards.
But at a thousand dollars plus, I decided to pursue other weapons.

it seems that I recently read that the 5.7 had become a military/police issue in parts of Europe...Italy maybe? The 5.7x28 is a fascinating round to me, ballistically speaking. It's like a comparison between .22 lr and .17 hmr... the .22 lr will thump a squirrel out of a tree at 50-75 yards, whereas a .17 hmr will turn a squirrel inside out at those distances. From what I read and hear, the 5.7 compared to a 9mm luger is the .17 hmr in the above comparison. I'm just about as interested in the older 7.62 pistol round. Funny thing is, even though they are both ballistically phenomical, neither can be used to shoot a qual round for chl.

I had the opportunity to shoot it at NRA's First Woman's Wilderness Escape at Whittington Center. The guns were supplied new and in the box and all the ammo we wanted was supplied as well. Needless to say, if I am given a gun and free ammo I WILL shoot until I am forced to quit or run out of ammo. So I put a couple 100 rounds through one. I was quite disappointed with the gun and caliber. I thought the recoil was comparable to a 9mm. The gun was quite top heavy making recoil management more of a chore than other handgun choices.

This gun was on my list for potential purchase until I was actually able to hold one. When I pick up a glock, it feels like a polymer pistol. When I pick up the FN5.7 it feels like a plastic pistol. This may seem a purely semantic distinction, but IMO, the FN just feels "cheap". It may be wonderfully accurate and/or fun to shoot, but I was disappointed.

The 5.7X28mm is one of those "secret squirrel/sneaky Pete" specialty rounds that get WAY over-hyped by Internet commandos and gun writers. If you look at the published specs it isn't much better than a .22 Magnum round. True, it will penetrate armor but, will it stop an attack? In the close constraints it was designed for it, it does the job, it isn't an all purpose cartridge. If faced by determined armor clad attackers I'd rather have a 5.56 or .308 rifle loaded with armor piercing ammo.
